VHT Wrinkle Spray Paint?

Post by DAC21 »

While searching for early Dash Paint threads one member was happy with the results they obtained with VHT Gray wrinkle paint (SP205) for their 1966/67? It is high temp rated, I guess it's mostly used for under the hood. I'm just wondering if anyone has used VHT wrinkle (regardless of color) and then used a 2k clear over it? I contacted VHT and they responded they haven't tested clear over their paint and had concerns about the wrinkle finish if doing so.

Thoughts?

Thanks

? Because you like the design of the wrinkle paint for a dash ? May have to DIY
I know if you spray to cold most auto paints will form a crack effect

I think the consensus is that the 1965-1967.5 metal dashes came with a mild wrinkle finish. I have a square foot of 22-gauge sheet metal to test spray. But even if it comes out how I want, if I can't seal it, I will need to keep looking for something else.

I sprayed my 67.5 dash and radio console with VHT hi-temp wrinkle paint:

Did not use a clear overtop.. did not want any glare from the dash in the sun.

Found the best way to get an even size pebbly wrinkle finish was to use a heat gun as I was spraying:

1) strip and clean metal dash and glovebox door
2) suspend them for painting
3) using a heat gun, preheat the metal a bit, not scorching hot but warm to touch
4) apply thin coat of VHT
5) use heat gun to gently cure VHT to smaller, even pebble surface consistency
6) repeat steps 4 & 5

If the VHT doesn't wrinkle evenly, strip it off and try again. Constant even heat made the difference.

Thanks for the info, so how many coats did you go with? Does the finish scratch very easily? If I recall the shift plate and console face should be the same finish? Is that what you went with? I'm not pulling my Dash (glove box and shift plate yes) so I'll have to perform the procedure while performing a bit of gymnastics LOL!

I went with about 4 coats. I had the shift plate and console removed and did everything together.

Doesn't seem to scratch easily but it collects dust as the car has been sitting for a couple years since I did this.

Don't know how you're going to do this in the car, dash removal isn't that hard, I'd recommend it for this
operation.
