Mixed up Carbs

After cleaning off 30 years or more of gunk and rust off in the carbs on my 66 1600 in the new ultrasonic cleaner (works good!) I first discovered that one carb has brass inlet fittings and nozzle adjusting knob, while the other carb has steel fittings and knobs. No big deal, carb replaced somewhere along the line? But what is bugging me is why the heck is the piston groove in a different place? The "normal" carb has the brass fittings and the vacuum port on the bottom and the piston groove in the front of carb. What is the other carb off of? Everything interchanges on the carbs, and the hole at bottom of piston is still in the back side of carb on the "abnormal" one. Could the one carb be off an earlier model?

the two styles are functionally similar, yes early and later. They are not identical and you can't interchange many of the parts between the two types. It would be best if you had a pair of one type or the other since there are several differences. hope this helps!

Thanks Kai....really good read! My feelings exactly JT, need to source a rebuildable carb to match. I have a pair of 69 2L carbs that I was going to clean and rebuild and install on the stroker after I got everything else dialed in. Now???? Damn these old cars keep throwing curve balls don't they!

I know I read it somewhere here about putting u20 carbs on an r16 manifold, but I searched and can't find. I have this love/hate relationship with computers and search engines! Gasoline engines easier than search engines, IMHO. Interested to see how it turned out from whoever did it.

Thanks again Kai! After reading that over, it seems I would need to do a whole lot more work to the intake and head than I want to do for a street driver!
