Front brake caliper rebuild? Front brake frozen

Post by MichaelClay »

So my front drivers side brake is frozen. I can turn the wheel but it’s difficult. I thought the rubber brake line was bad so I ordered new ones they don’t fit threads are wrong at the caliper. Stupid parts stores. Anyway I removed the brake line to replace it and the wheel is still stuck. I opened the bleeder screw on the caliper to relieve pressure but no go still stuck. So I figure it’s the caliper for sure. Now the car sat for 3 years in Arizona so I’m wondering if I take the caliper off and press in the piston maybe it would break it lose and all will be good.
Most likely not so it’s been 25+ years since I’ve rebuilt a caliper. How difficult is it? Are kits available? Can I send it to somebody and they rebuild it for me and I pay for the service? What are my options here? I still want to replace the brake lines I just have to find some.
I’ve attached a couple pictures
I know long story. Sorry. I’m frustrated. I just want to drive my car

Brake hoses, aftermarket and a bit shorter than OEM but work fine from what other members have posted.

Another rebuild option is Karps Power Brake. Very good, very nice... but can take some time.

Good luck!

Awesome guys thanks! I took the brake lines I bought back. They call this one a rear it's actually a front

Now I need to find a guide for removing the caliper and get them shipped off

FLAPS (Favorite Local Autoparts Stores) are not your friend when it comes to our old Datsuns. Yes, you will find some stuff, but......

You'll actually be surprised to find how much is still available from Nissan...like caliper rebuild kits!

P/N D1ABM-73425

The Techwiki and folks here are excellent resources on what you need and what to buy. And don't forget to support our vendors! Yes, right now is tough with Dean (DatsunParts.com) and JT (Jim Tyler - Datsun Restoration Products) closed until July 1st, but there are others. If you have to replace the brake hoses, an excellent upgrade is the stainless steel hoses. Brian (Sin City Datsuns) has them or get the 4-hose package that includes the clutch slave hose.

Anyway, it's way too easy to get frustrated (don't ask me how I know).

I have Datsun front caliper rebuild kits. Genuine Nissan: $50 shipped
I have on one kit, maybe 2.
One kit repairs all 4 cylinders) 41120-73425
or buy 4 all new Front Calipers (inner & Outer) for $500.

I think I'm going to ship them off to whitepost.com and have them rebuilt. I'll call them in the morning. Evidently they can make brake hoses as well so I'm going to have a set made I think or maybe I will look for a local shop to make me a set of hoses.

So it’s $220 per wheel. $65 per hose made. Yikes. I need to explore my options lol

I linked a aftermarket hose $19 each earlier in the thread. Not sure where $220 per wheel came from unless they didn't understand what I was asking to be quoted. $85ea. did seem a bit low for fronts. Even at $110 ea. per cylinder not that bad. Their email reply below:

June 17th

"Dennis,

Yes, wheel cylinders (rears) and Dunlops (fronts) (removed from caliper housing) are both $85 ea. plus s/h. Our service form is attached.

Thanks,

For you inner cylinder only, here is brand new for $90 +T/S. Disregard the Jaquar application it is the same as the Roadster. Mine actually arrived in Nissan packaging. Then you just need to get your outer cylinder rebuilt.
