Oil filter

Look first off I’d like to start by saying I’m familiar with cars. But I know when if comes to a vintage Datsun I’m clueless so I’m sorry. Is the picture below the oil filter? Do I replace it? Or do I clean it? I bought a standard looking oil filter. I’ve been all under the engine I can’t find it so as far as I can tell this has to be it.

Yes, that is the oil filter, and location, although yours is very unusual looking. Maybe some type of early filter that had a replaceable filter element? Or did the canister break apart?

Yes that is the oil filter "canister", the element is replaceable inside. The cartridge's should be available locally, or see if you can get a number off the existing unit.
I believe you can convert it to run the later style filter that you have purchased.
But I am not sure on the this style.

It appears that the screw on part that connects the base and the filter is still inside the old filter. It threads into the base and the filter then screws onto that.
There should also be a short 3" or so tube that fits inside the filter as well. It helps to keep oil from draining back so the engine gets pressure faster. It is important to have it.

The threaded part you can see should come out of the filter canister itself. That part usually stays in the base. Try to unscrew it from the filter. The Wix filter you have is correct and will then screw down onto the threaded piece once it's in the mount.

Sorry, but I am pretty sure that Greg is incorrect with your style filter cannister. Replace the inner element and you will be fine. If you change the base so it accepts the newer style filter, then you need the anti-drainback tube.

Certainly could Be! I've never had or seen a stock filter set up... mine always had the spin on filter (36yrs of ownership). I had not heard that the drain back tube was "aftermarket" so to speak, thought it was a stock part.

That’s what’s there. I’ll find a new element and be done with it. I’m sure it should come with a new gasket/O ring or no?

Greg, the 1500 did not come with a spin-on filter. So he just needs to replace the element, as he shows, the tube is there, but the base is different than the spin on filter. IF he changes the filter base to a later style he can use a spin on filter, and will need a drain back tube that goes with it.
