Update. I received the rhombic mesh material that I purchased for the grill back and installed it. The grill is now finished and I am very happy with the fit and finish of all of the products involved. Here are a couple pics of the finished grill for anyone considering a purchase. Also, here is the rhombic mesh that I purchased from Amazon It comes in black or silver:

I found metal lath at Home Depot that is cheap and a close match for original b acking material. It is zinc plated and can be left as is or painted black. A sheet is less than $10 and can make 3-4 backers.

Actually Herb Petty (Modesto Datsun Roadsters) was the "pioneer" of the 1500 grille swap. His swap seemed somehow more appropriate since his car was an early (medium flare) car....
