Re: pistons
I'm terribly sorry to say but that engine is done. You have broken pistons, possibly from detonation (overly advanced ignition timing). You will have to rebuild the engine with new pistons. I suggest locating another used R16 if you can that is known to be good and swapping it in.

Re: pistons
really ? the entire motor ? nothing is scared except for the pistons . and the timing chain and gears. and cam are all good . only 2 pistons r done .. why would I say the entire motor is gone ? I don't believe it was set too high but something happened to it for sure . detonation . maybe rings are gone too ,but they look ok so far . whatever happened . I thought it was my head gasket . bummer .Gregs672000 wrote: Tue May 31, 2022 10:39 pm I'm terribly sorry to say but that engine is done. Re: pistons
Ouch!
Greg is right. The engine requires a full rebuild. That damage would have spread metal pieces/shavings throughout the entire engine. Strange though, based on the location and size of the ‘holes’ (more on the sides and not in the center and somewhat symmetrical), I would have suspected the damage was perhaps caused by part of a valve letting go (probably an exhaust valve) or maybe even a screw or something similar being sucked into the combustion chamber
You didn’t find anything else?

Re: pistons
Hey Lorna, long time! Both those pistons are toast and the cylinders at least need to be bored out to clear the scoring, then finding pistons/rings to fit might be a challenge. I agree with the others, no need to try and fix 2 cylinders. Take the motor out and rebuild it, measure the cylinder to see if they can still be used. I know of a R16 complete with tranny in Paso came out of a 68 so should be 5 main motor, a nice improvement over your 3 main. Not sure if it's for sale or not but I can find out for you if you want to go that route.
