You should have a two wire harness with red with black stripe wires that runs up over the transmission to connect at the firewall where the harnesses come through the firewall. Just below your master cylinders.

There are no wires from the switch to that location, and I don't see any connecters that are empty. Gonna have to do something myself.

There are two bullet connectors that exit from the hood harness along with the wires for the starter harness. There should also be two plugs that connect the rear tail light harness since you have a 70.

Take a look at this, upper left corner.

All the wires to the reverse lights, tail lights, license plate, are all intact. But there are now wires or connectors in the at area that fit the description. Some of the under the hood electrical has been modified by previous owner/restorer. all that's left is the switch with its two wires that are attached. I'm going to have to do something myself to get them to work. I seriously appreciate your help!

My '68 was same.
Assuming your '70 is the same, if you look at the harness near your brake master, you should have two red/black wires. Mine had bullet connectors on them but yours may have been hacked.
Turn your ignition on and check for voltage at those two wires. There should be 12v+/- at one of the two, no voltage at the other.
Have you checked that your switch operates correctly? If not, crawl under the car and check for continuity between the two wires from the switch. If open circuit in any gear but reverse and closed (no or little resistance) in reverse the switch is working. If any other condition, there's a problem with the switch.
Assuming voltage at the harness and a good switch, all you need to do is run wires from the two connectors at the firewall to the switch. Doesn't matter which wire goes to which terminal on the switch. Once that's done, you should have power to your back up light circuit so you can go back to the backup light wire and check for voltage with the car in reverse and the ignition on. If you have voltage to the light it should work. If it doesn't, there's a problem with the light.

Or as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. If you post a picture or two we might be able to sort it out.

Ok so I had some time and got under the car and checked the switch with an ohm meter. I also took the lights off cleaned and painted the outside of them, and tested the bulb. Much to my surprise every thing was working. So I ran a new wire from the switch through the fire wall. Then I connected the wire to the positive on both backup lights. Then I connected a 30 amp fuse inline and connected that to the battery. Had my wife stand behind the car and I shifted in and out of reverse several times and every thing worked properly!!! Here in NY State the car has to have a safety inspection so now with working reverse lights I went to get it inspected and as I was walking to the building I turned and looked at the car and the reverse lights were ON!!!! arrrgggg! So now is it the switch being in to far as I've seen mentioned in the thread or do I have a short, or did I do something wrong?

If you want a stock type reverse harness and the connectors from the dash harness are intact I can make you one when I get back from Europe in a few days.

The wires under the hood have been changed. I don't have the proper set up. I do appreciate help and offer.

Dumb question??
Will a 4speed switch work in the 5speed transmission?

Also - can the 4speed transmission mount be altered to fit Rgr 5speed transmission?

Cam: Pretty sure I remember the switches being all different for 1500/ 1600 /2000

And yes, you can use R16 trans mounts on a U20 (at least for the latter model years). You just have to drill the mounting holes out a bit.
