Somehow I ended up with 3 of these.. one has the connection exiting on the left while the other 2 have it on the right. All have the same numbers printed on them. All of them sound like they have circa 1950 steel wheel roller skate bearings in them with varying degrees of "crunch" as I spin the spinny part.
Has anyone rebuilt one of these? Is it a matter of replacing bearings and brushes?

Re: Alternator rebuild process?
First thing I’d do is take them to a parts house to verify that at least one of them works. No use putting bearings in a unit that has bad windings or diodes.
After that it’s just a matter of pressing the bearings off & on.
Most brushes have a mark on their sides that are wear limit marks. Either pay attention to them or just replace them.
When putting it back together you’ll probably have trouble getting the brushes to stay retracted so the rear cover can be installed. Most alternators have a hole in the back cover by the brushes so you can insert a paper clip to hold them back. When you pull the clip out you should hear 2 clicks as the brushes pop into place.
Peace,
Pat

Re: Alternator rebuild process?
FWIW, even though I can rebuild my own starters or alternators, I send them out to a local shop that specializes in that. Usually around $100 Cad and they come back looking like a new with all new bits and tested. Not worth my time and not having to source all the brushes bearing contacts and everything for that price.

Well, that's always worth it. I'll see what I can find locally.
