colors behind the grill

Post by johnscf »

Getting ready to put my radiator back in and then the grill. I have seen posts that talk about the behind the grill area being painted black but am unclear as to exactly what is black and what is typically body color. Does any one have any pictures that show what sections are black and what are body color?

I found a pretty good pic on the www. https://st.automobilemag.com/uploads/si ... grille.jpg

I was told that the black paint was done by hand with a brush at the factory - not sure if that is true...

So any of the body color that shows through the grill gets black. So around the top and certainly the middle support

I used a flat black Rust oleum. I will look for some old restoration pics of my car without the grill...

Found one...

Don’t have any photos yet but I plan on painting all the sheet metal, radiator supports & horns black. Haven’t decided about the hood hinges, they may show.

Peace,

Hi Charlie, I have photos that show this very clearly...

I took photos because I thought the hand-painting was so cool.

You can see that the black painting spanned the junction of the fender. Over screws and everything.

Incidentally, I uncovered the same hand-painted technique under the windshield frame.

I think it's so cool to see a very individual, unique, and personal touch after 50+ years. Gets the imagination going...

Hope they help.

Brand new paint job so I was not about to slather some black paint on it. Used the peel off stuff and turned out very nice.
66 stroker, almost done.
67 basket case, paint coming soon.
