Initially I had the dizzy off 180 - why does that always seem to happen - but when it would not fire and I got loud pops, I knew something was wrong, so I reset the dizzy at TDC (COMPRESSION STROKE) at the 11:25 position (it could be 11:22 or 11:38 for all I know) and it started up and ran! How hard is it to get that oil pump slot in the correct position to drop in the dist. I must have re-tried 50 times! I am pretty sure it is right now but a quick question. Should my static timing be set at 0 or 16 BTDC. I have a non-smog set up using an EI. at 0 the rotor is past #1 (counter clockwise) so at 16 BTDC it is pointing at #1.. Is that correct, or am I a tooth off. I was afraid to run it very long before I was sure.
It ran, but wanted a lot of choke, and would die once I tried to back off the choke even a little bit, which does not seem right, but not sure how a tight unbroken in engine would perform.
Also, since I am reusing my original cam, is there a need for the 2K RPM 20-minute cam break-in, or can I break this in at an idle or lower RPM before changing the oil and buttoning everything up awaiting reattaching the body (After I finish body work and painting). I know I am asking the right crowd.
Oh, and I was able to test my tranny which I went through but did not rebuild. All the gears worked, but I did not try to shift white it was running.
BTW I did prime the engine by spinning the oil pump cc with my drill, and also spun the engine with the starter and plugs out and a squirt of oil in each hole before the start-up. Without this forum I would have never attempted all this, but I research old threads all the time - Thank you guys! And yes, I will post some pics if I can remember how
