Parking brake assembly diagram 1968 1600

Post by TobyMan »

Anyone have a diagram of the parking/ emergency brake assembly for a 1968 1600? I'm pulling mine off, since it doesn't work ( parts rusted solid, cables rusted through) and rebuilding it. Can't seem to find a schematic showing all the parts and/or how it all comes apart/goes together. Thanks

Does anyone know the lengths for the 3 parking brake cables?1968 1600 stock. I think the front one is 15 (from reading some on the Rallye site). I don't have all of the front cable or the middle "adjustable" cable. I do still have the rear one intact and when I measure it, it's 16.5 inches (without the two ends). I found a site online that makes them but I need to know more about length/diameter. I looked through the vendor list but didn't see anyone with cables except Dann had a few. Thanks for any info/thoughts.
BTW its been in the teens with real feel single negative digits here in Western New York last few weeks 30 inches of snow. I work on the car a couple hours and come in. Have been making what I feel is alot of progress. If you can't drive it at least I can work on it, I still have 3 months to put it all back together. Toby

Toby,

I assume that the '68 cables are the same as the '70, and luckily my '70 is up on the lift and I just put on those 3 cables. I'll go out there tomorrow and measure them. Just to confirm, you are measuring the length of just the cables, without the end brackets, correct? For the middle cable, should I measure to the end of the threaded adjuster?

Thanks Erik, according to carpartsmanual.com they are the same. Is yours a 1600 or 2000? Measuring to the end of the adjuster on the middle one and to the ends without the brackets for the other two would be great. You mentioned you just put them on. Can you tell me where you got them? I haven't been able to locate any replacements and have been looking into using threaded rod for the cables.

Mine were all intact, just dirty & surface rusted. So I blasted them and had everything zinc plated, and they look like new.

Looking at them, it seems that the important measurements on the front and rear would be cable length (just cable itself, not including the pressed-on end cylinders that lock it into the U-brackets, and hole to hole length from bracket to bracket. If you are having new ones made, this last measurement seems most important for everything to work as it should. Shorter or longer end brackets with an accompanying change in cable length should work just fine. Here is what I have, and my car is also a 1600, though I doubt there is a difference with the 2000.

Front:
Cable only 11.5"
Hole center to hole center 14.375"

Center:
Cable only 8.75"
Threaded rod 4.125"
Hole center to end of threaded rod 14.375

Rear:
Cable only 16.375
Hole center to hole center 19.375

Hope that all makes sense. If you need any other measurements, let me know.

Any chance you could send me a picture of the whole setup. Looking to see if it's all in a straight line so I could use rids instead of cable.

They are in straight lines, and you could maybe use rods for the front two, but the rear cable goes from body to axle and probably needs more flex than a rod will give you. Here are the first two. My third isn't hooked up yet since body is off frame.
