2000 alternator relocation

Post by theunz »

Can anybody post a picture or link me to a thread showing the relocation of a stock alternator to the passenger side. I have the big smog bracket and the smog triangle, but I’m just not putting two plus two together. And remember “a picture is worth a thousand words”😀 Appreciate any help.

This should help. You will need spacers and longer bolts too.

Thanks to both of you. The triangle piece was throwing me off. I thought that only the smog mount held the alternator, and didn’t understand what the triangle’s purpose was. Was also wondering if the alternator mounted high or low, but redroadster’s picture cleared that up. Will tackle that tomorrow and then it’s transmission rebuild time. Wish me luck😱

Mike, I have rebuilt 4 (5 speed) transmissions and I found the best thing to do is to set up a side table with paper on it and lay the parts/pieces out on it in the order that you take them off. The paper absorbs any oil/grim and you can write on it if there is something to note - like the direction it goes back on or any defect that you noticed on a specific part (so you can source a replacement), If the part has a locking ball bearing, place it in the ID of the part. Use a cup for small parts that go together - like the shift rod indexing springs and ball bearings.

The illustration in the manual is hard to follow...

Good Luck! It's not as hard as you might think! Take your time and be methodical.

Thanks for the inspiration Joe, I bought a large oil drip pan that I was going to line with cardboard to lay the pieces out on, but I hadn’t thought of making notes on it. Great idea! I have rebuilt car and motorcycle engines even a V-6 boat engine, but never a transmission. I know it’s just a bunch of parts put together in a specific order, there’s just so damn many of them😱
P.S. They all worked when I was done😎

Agree with Joe on the layout. I've done a few now (my Oct 2011 page) I went so far as to draw the actual parts and directions of install on the brown paper covered table. On my Aug 2020 page I did an early box and numbered every part in a bag and took LOTS of notes. Nissan still had the center plate bolts available (much better upgrade as they have a star head instead of the Phillips head) (Bolt Fixing # 01141-00021). Good luck and have fun with it.
