chrome plating

Post by mewboys »

I am sending a bunch of parts for chrome plating for my 68 2000. There are 2 parts I am having trouble getting prepare for the plating shop. They are the door handles and the rear reflectors. The door handle spring mechanism looks to be difficult to reinstall once taken apart. The red plastic reflectors and the metal frames do not come apart. Do people re-plating these parts?

Most people replace the rear reflectors. It would include the chrome peice, reflector and the rubber gasket. I think about $50 a pair.

The reflectors are still available as new. No use spending two or three times as much to plate vs new. Nissan P/N 26560-10400, shop around, should be less than $30 each.

Thanks for the information. I am going to guess the door handle will be in the same situation. They are still available new. I got most of the things together except for all the grill items and side moldings. Those items are still being re-chrome, right? Here is what I plan to get re-chrome:
  • Front bumper & over riders
  • Rear bumper & over riders
  • Rear lights
  • License plate light
  • Reverse light
  • Hub caps
  • Triangular fix window frame
  • Head light chrome ring
  • Trunk trim piece
  • Shift stick
  • Front grill pieces
  • Side moldings
  • Parking brake assembly for yellow chrome (these are the 4 main pieces that goes under the car)

Side moldings are stainless not chrome. Straighten and polish.
Nice new stainless F and R bumpers are available from the Vietnam supplier for currently $840 on Ebay.
2000 grille center bars are stainless not chrome. Grille surround is available new from Vietnam for $330.

"Head light chrome ring"

Still available, see link, Save more going directly to Nissan. If you meant the headlight bezel, yes those are NLA and would require new chrome.

Thank you, Ted Heaton and DAC21. That is good to know. I will see how much the shop going to charge me for the F & R bumpers and over riders.

I was visiting this fellow I know who has a nationally recognized resto and rat rod shop. He was looking my roadster over and I asked his advice on the bumpers. He told me that I should get the Vietnamese bumpers because many times the re-chromed ones don't come back straightened to how you expect they will. So I ordered the polished stainless ones and everyone assumes that they are chrome.

Aren't the triangular windows stainless on a '68?

Who is doing your chrome? I've got a whole pile of stuff I need to get done for another project, but I can't find anywhere close that does good chrome.

I have seen some YouTube video of some newish chrome multi coat spray on process. Anyone actually seen the results? Highly doubtful for bumpers / grills and such. But wondering for emblems and other small parts is it a consideration?
