NewB Contest: Spot the error

Post by jhayden »

Open only to Newbies! For instructional purposes only (not to be critical) check out the engine bay photos of this newly advertised SRL cutie:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/115086496495?h ... Swk3FheufO

One of the most common mistakes with our cars is visible in both photos. Neither cosmetic nor aesthetic, but will cause your car not to run properly, and will cause damage over time.

Submit your answer here on this forum, and any Non-Newby is eligible to declare you the winner!

(If the owner of this cutie is a member here, I mean no disrespect -- just trying to save someone else's U20.)

I think Jon is referring to just one item, but it’s shown in both photos. Hint, it’s something that KeithOlan is very involved with.

Orange distributor cap.
It must be black for proper operation.

Okay... I'm an unapologetic newbie... and I don't have a 2L...

but I'm going to throw a guess: the pressure regulator is piped wrong?

Close, but no cigar. :smt017 :smt018
The fuel flow and plumbing thru the thermal valve is correct.
The return line to the tank is not correctly routed but not a problem, just very untidy.

I agree that the fuel lines are untidy but what's the long term issue and the driveability problem?

ps.the screen name says it all. What do I win?

The fuel lines are ugly and routed incorrectly but go to the correct places so that isn't the problem.

I see nothing mechanically or electrically wrong with these engine pictures.
Fuel, spark, air - All three systems appear correctly connected (fuel lines, firing order, coil wiring, intake sys., etc.).
Untidy, yes, with some obvious maintenance issues and questionable connection/routing.

Lol … Maybe 🤔. But that routing should not damage the engine as alluded to in the original post.
Might make adjusting the idle a bit tricky, but it also helps reduce the lean condition at idle by applying more advance and will help the engine run cooler - That’s a plus, not a minus. I don’t think that’s what he is trying to point out 🤔 ???
