How to modify a Boxster rollbar?

Post by dawnmatthies »

We are working on resurrecting our 69' 2000 (garaged for too many years) and would like to install a roll bar. We have looked at the Autopower bar, but would prefer to modify a Boxster bar if possible (don't like that the Autopower bar obstructs the rear view mirror). I know that several people have posted pictures of roadsters with Boxster rollbars, but does anyone know what must be done to make it roadster-ready?

Most roll bars I have seen for sale for Datsun Roadsters won't protect you from a actual roll over. They typically bolt to the floor and are only so strong. With that said, some of the Autopower ones look pretty nice. I'm not sure which ones of theirs are available for the roadster.
My old rollbar was much larger diameter than the Autopower ones so my vote w one.ould be with theirs.
I didn't notice obstruction from my rollbar and I doubt there would be any noticeable hindrance from the Autopower one as it looks smaller diameter.
My 2 cents is I would not consider it an issue. They look really nice BTW.

Mine sets so close to my head I know it needs to be thick foam wrapped & + wear a helmet, it could crack your 1/4 "skull instantly in a lite wreck , but has to strengthen the body in a side impact and of course roll over
@kc 's dragstrip if you had a roll bar you had to have a helmet on

My auto power roll-bar sits well behind my headrest so I m not concerned with hitting my head? I do however have seatbelt retractors right behind my seat that keeps it from going back the last inch. Even if they did go all the way back there would still be sufficient clearance. I’m 5’10” and my rear view mirror sights just under the bar with good visibility. No bolt in roll-bar is as good as a weld in bar, but with decent reinforcement plates under the body they are a hell of a lot better than the wimpy A pillars. On a final note, if you are in a bad enough wreck to utilize the roll-bar than what you really need is a prepaid funeral plan😱

Contact Kelly on this forum, she's the one that had the boxster roll bar modified to fit:

Hey Alvin,

Do you have an alternate contact for Kelly? It looks like 2018 was the last time she was here. I sent her a pm.

thanks,
Chris

Thank you all for your help/suggestions. Good to hear that the autopower bar doesn't obstruct your view from rear-view mirror; I had read someplace that it did. Would love to chat with Kelly (?) about their bar, just for perspective. Totally understand that the bar is not very effective in a sufficiently bad crash when bolted into the body, but we would like to have one just in case - but also for the purpose of seat belt placement. We can't control the outcome of a rollover, but we can control whether or not we become projectiles in a more typical collision :)
