1969 Datsun 2000 OFFER $$?????

Post by Pschram68 »

Just looking for some group feedback here to try and make a “fair offer” on a 1969 Datsun 2000. Met a REALLY nice guy named Rick in Hermann, MO. Has 3 Datsun roadsters. Is open to selling a 1969 Datsun 2000. Body is in VERY god shape. I rate it an 8. Straight. No rust. Non-original paint. Interior would rate a 4. Needs seats refurbished and “yes” has the cracks in the dash board. Engine: non-running. Does have original engine/trans. Engine is not locked up. Head was removed for installation of new valves is the “story.” Does have both carbs. Has convertible top “frame” but no cloth. Has original hard top. Again…this is just to ask for feedback on a “fair price” for a car like this. Rick is a retired school teacher and a really nice guy so want both of us to be happy.

I had a 1970 Datsun 1600 about 20 years ago and to this day wish I never sold it. Fun car. Feedback would be appreciated for sure!! PETE

I always look at a non running car with the attitude that everything that might be bad is bad. That way you get no disappointments. Any suspect items that turn out to be good is a bonus. Why should you take the risk, let the owner be the one to gamble.
On this car the head may be junk, the transmission may (probably) need a rebuild, carbs the same.
A full engine gasket set for a U20 is about $500. Parts alone to rebuild engine about $5,000, trans one or two grand. Brakes $1,500, rubber kit $1,000. Interior $1,500 and way up, etc. etc.
I think $1,000 would be a good price for you, and $2,000 would be good for him.
But, what do I know. I am constantly surprised at the escalating prices of these cars.

1969 2000 solex mine since 1972, under resurrection. (Finally resurrected as of spring 2019!)
1969 Porsche 911s -worth more, but not as valuable! Gone!

I would think a very good shape body is worth more. I paid $1k for a CA desert roller over a decade ago to make sure I had something solid to work with (completely parted out--including the factory LS!), and that was before the insanity. If the body really is in good shape, and has all the parts besides the questionable engine, then I'd be thinking $2k from you would still be a good deal. Put it this way; if I was the seller I wouldn't let it go for less than that, and I possibly would ask more given inflationary pressures on prices.
