Well, I cleaned everything up and did a test run today. As far as I can tell the trans itself isn't leaking, but rather getting blowback from the bell housing area. And my diff is still dry.
Unfortunately rear main/oil pan are still grumpy. This is like half a mile's worth. I'm honestly thinking of rigging something up to sit under the 2 lower holes on the bell housing and just catch oil.
Even after replacing the oil pan gasket, I still get a few drops out of the back of the pan after a run. I can see a light sheen on one side of the bell housing so I know it’s not the rear main or the Trans pan itself and the rest of the oil pan is dry. Even after re-torquing and following the tightening sequence, it’s still there. I’ve owned three Datsuns with the 1600 engine and always had this problem - Seems like a common issue on these engines. Annoying to say the least . Pretty much at the point where I’m just going to have to live with it now.

Kai, do check the tach cable seals at the distributor mount as they often leak a bit after many years of use. Helped my leaks a lot, but I know my rear main leaks...

You are absolutely correct Greg, it was also leaking a bit, and was one of things I fixed while trying to find ‘the other’ leak. There was also a small leak from the fuel pump … I feel I’m sooo close, the 100% solution must be just around the next fitting/ nut/ line/ gasket/ etc

New seal in. I liked how the National felt going in more than the Duralast. You can see how the housing has some pretty big gouges out of it. Maybe a gorilla trying to get a seal out in the ancient past.
well trans output seal is a pretty straightforward job especially the second time around. this is my daily so gotta be persistent can't just park her or drop her off at a shop for weeks.
Probably final update on this job. Looks like the National seal worked. 50 miles and no sign of a leak from the output shaft. So now just my oil pan/rear main leaks to worry about.
You have a 50/50 chance that your RMS leak might be just the bottom half. I had to do top end work recently and was also having a rear leak. Pulled rear crank cap and replaced the half and it worked. Hopefully yours too if it is in fact your rms.

wellll, I spoke too soon. This car likes to throw headscratchers at me. Quite a significant leak from not too many miles. Probably worse than what I started with or my first attempt!
The seal itself looks ok, nothing to indicate it got past the right stuff on the outer diameter....I can only imagine it's leaking around the inner diameter?
The surface of the driveshaft where the seal rides is smooth and I can't feel any issues.

Not yet. I put in one of the recommended napa seals (13907) and it still leaked. I ordered a slightly smaller diameter one out of a catalogue but havent tried it yet.
The inner is 1 3/8 (34.92), and the recommended seals I've tried are 35mm..again probably not enuff to actually make a diff but I figured I'd try it.
