Is this publication any good for a 1600?

Post by DAC21 »

I know there is much better material for download here on 311s, but I like a book in my hand while in the garage without killing a tree by printing the available on-line manuals. Does this book have any value, it less than $15 vs the $50 service manual I see floating around which I realize is probably the Gold Standard.

Thank you

Dennis,

I've been doing shade tree wrenching since the 60's & never liked Chilton manuals. They never seemed to have the information I was looking for & they repeated stuff literally 5 or more times in different parts of the manual to pad out the size of the manual. Having said that, I also seem to recall that one of the factory Roadster manuals was produced by Chilton, but I could be wrong. For $15 I'd say it was a good deal. Any manual is better than none.

Peace,
Pat

Well,I learned everything mechanical with my trusty Chiltons manual for my 620 PU when I was a kid, so maybe they vary. I recently used my Haynes manual for a 620 to help me on a Roadster question.

Some are better than others, but all are better than nothing. Each manual may have something the others don’t, or often a picture that shows just how that fiddily part fits. For 15 bucks why not?

Chiltons has most of the details that you will need, but it will require digging and understanding to find it. You can download the factory shop manuals here - free is very good.

I have the manual pictured, in addition to the 1600/2000 specific manual. It is very basic and covers a little bit about a lot of models. It IS better than nothing, though!

I, too, like having a book in my hand. You could probably get by ok using this and then printing just specific pages off the free internet version of the Sports manual.

The best thing I like about this manual is having all of the tune up specs in one table. It's my go to for tune ups.
