Removing the Tach
1970 1600
Without removing the dash, how hard is it to remove the tach?? Doesn't seem to be much clearance or wiggle room up there.
Thanks
Pete

Re: Removing the Tach
My opinion is that the Tach and Speedo at least on my flat dash are easier than the small gauges. In my opinion it helps a lot to have the seat out.

Re: Removing the Tach
On our high windshield cars, its easiest to remove drivers seat and the steering column clamp under the dash. Then you can lay on your back with your head jammed against the pedals and see well enough to get the wingnuts off and work the gauges out. I'm 6'-4 so I need all the elbow room I can get but a more compact person might not need as much room.

Re: Removing the Tach
If you remove the speedo, it's easier

Re: Removing the Tach
Think that’s what I did remove the speedo then that allows you to get your hand in there to tackle the tach.

Get limber and warm up your curse vocabulary. I just pulled mine. No room for tools. I ended up using a hammer and drift to loosen the wing nuts.

Re: Removing the Tach
yes, you can remove the dash - the difficulty lies in the sort of fasteners you have. Stock AFAIK is 10mm bolt with phillips insert. I took a 10mm socket, ground the sides down so that it would fit into the dents, then drilled 2 holes right through at right angles and use a drill bit to slowly undo. Some people apparently have used the small angled screw driver. The biggest pain is the oil line - the rest have some play in them.

Re: Removing the Tach
My 68 does not have hex head bolts so I can't do that trick. Doing this instead, 3/6 done so far.Pjackb wrote: Mon Feb 22, 2021 2:00 pm follow up question can you remove the whole dash without removing windshield on a 68-70 ?

Re: Removing the Tach
I have replaced the
tacho twice in my 69 hi screen, I have never taken speedo out to do it, but have dropped column, I have 2 minor mod that make the job easier ( i have posted this about 8 yrs ago) I cut a slot in the left hand Mount bracket,Tach facing you, and i use a wing nut and washer on this mount, which makes it much easier as this is the hardest to put the nut back on, as next time you remove it you can leave the washer and wingnut in place, and just turn the tacho slightly to release it,and much easier to tighten back up with finger tip, still not a nice job but quite doable.. Cheers...
