Thoughts on Tires for original 4" Rims......

I'm going to be bringing my 67 over to my house in the next month or two. The 45 year old tires on it held air 4 years ago, now? I need to at least have a roller to get it towed and into my garage. So if I now need new tires so be it. I'm for the foreseeable future going to keep the 4" rims. I want to be prepared if I need to get some new rubber pretty quick.

Research indicates I can get away with an 165mm tire on a 4" rim (stretching it, but apparently doable) I'm looking at 165/80r/14 and 165/75r/14 tires. The 165/80r/14 is within a 1/4 inch diameter of the factory tire. So I would think the speedo difference is probably about one mile an hour at 65 MPH. The 165/75r/14 tire would be about .85 of an inch shorter diameter that the original 5.60-14 factory tire and would be in the neighborhood of 3 MPH difference speedo vs. actual at about 65 MPH. I'm THINKING on a 4" rim rim with 165mm wide tires the slightly smaller side wall on the 165/75r/14 really doesn't amount to much in handling vs 165/80r/14?

I know Pirelli Centurato tires have have been recommended on the board in 165HR14. I have read some threads on MGB boards comparing the Centurato to the Vredestein Sprint Classic 165HR14. Dare I say it would appear the Vredestein tires were recommended a bit more. Not to mention about a $220 savings vs the Pirreli's for 4 tires. The UTQG of 220 isn't much to write about with the Vredestein's but I imagine that means softer compound and reasonable handling. I doubt I'd be driving more than 1,500 miles a year so they would still probably last ten years.

Thoughts, is the Vredestein's a reasonable choice? Is there anything else out there that should be considered in the $130 ea. price range?

I think if you are running the original rims yours are 4.5 width. That half inch makes a big difference. 175mm wide tires definitely won't mount on a 4 inch rim. 165mm is pushing it, actually the Vredestein's I mentioned may not be good for a 4" rim, I may need to go to 155mm tire, ugh!

Many of the early Porsche owners use the Vred’s with good results, albeit in a different size. They claim good handling and a classic look. Depends on what you want to achieve. If you just want something to roll on, than anything will do. If you want better handling and a classic look, then the Vred’s are about your cheapest choice for a good tire. Most likely your tires will age out (5 to 7 years) before they wear out. If you are a year or two from driving it than I would just buy some used tires.

The Pirelli's 165hr14 have a recommended rim width of 4", 4.5" and 5.5". The Vredestein's are 4.5" to 5.5" I wonder if there is something in the Pirelli build quality that allows them to go down to a 4" rim, whereas Vredestein do not, hummmm???

Best bang for the buck I could find. Cheap, and the shop put them on. The car handled GREAT, at least until I overheated them one too many times...

If you want white walls I bought these. Not meant for high performance driving but I run them pretty good through the corners. I have them on four and half inch rims.

175/70/14 will work on 4" rims but is outside the recommended manufacturer width (4.5"-6")

these are touring tire with tall sidewalls so obviously they dont perform like performance tires , but good enough for lightly spirited driving

Wondering if there could be a situation were a Retailor would refuse to mount a Tire not in the recommended range?
