Lighter ground
Hi quick question, is the lighter grounded with a wire or to the body? Are there two wires to it or just the blue/ white one Thanks Joe

Re: Lighter ground
Mine just grounds through the dash. I will go look @ the 2 harnesses I have on the shelf to be sure that’s how it came., I’ll post again if they are different.
Peace,
Pat

Re: Lighter ground
Generally speaking while electrical components are often grounded at the factory through the sheet metal, it is considered a good idea during a restoration to run more positive grounds by wire. My dash is powder coated so I ran a ground from one of the dash mount studs to all of the components. Since the lighter draws more current than gauge lights, if you run a wire it will of course need to be the same gauge as the power wire.

Re: Lighter ground
Sorry, but there is something empirically wrong with the statement "it is considered a good idea during a restoration to run more positive grounds by wire."
Perhaps "more ground wires" would suffice?
what about "less positive grounds" - what is a positive ground anyway - are there more grounded positives??
My mind is swimming in confusion!

Re: Lighter ground
Sorry about the confusion, there is of course the additional confusion in the OP about the lighter ground. How many ounces lighter is it? Of course "more ground wires" is also confusing because when the sheet metal is used as the ground during manufacturing there are NO wire grounds for many components that need grounding. Then it really gets confusing when working on and old car that originally had good electrical bonds all through the various body parts, after 50 years of exposure to water and salt many of those bonds in between body parts are insulated by corrosion, so that many parts that are obviously firmly attached to sheet metal somehow test out to not be grounded. This makes it worthwhile to be positive about your grounds by running some wire.

C.Costine - the confusion, which I am admittedly blowing out of proportion for humor, is the fact that I think of POSITIVE as HOT and Ground as, well, ground, and if you are seeking a "positive ground" - it seems that you are seeking a "definite short".
To be clear, I fully realize that you are merely tying to state that you need "assurance" that you have a solid and reliable ground!
