Hello everyone,
I am doing some work on my 68 U20.
One of them is changing the head gasket.
Everything went great so far (I guess).
I am about the reassable everything but I have some issues with the arp studs.
So my questions are :
* What kind of nut do you use to fasten them.
Mine are way to big and if I would use a thinner one (with a small torque wrench) the torque wrench will not be strong enough to reach the torque specs.
* About the the studs on the smaller side.
The 2 studs which are in the little guides, the nut is not going all the way in because of the little guides the studs sit deeper then the others.
I am not sure if I am explaining my self very well but the pictures could help...
I would be grateful for any tips!
Thanks,
Pierre

Re: Head question
Use a 12 point 1/2 inch socket with a 3/8ths drive. If you don't have a torque wrench that's 3/8ths drive, then get a 1/2 to 3/8ths reducer for your torque wrench. Regarding the stud, position them into the head such that the stud threads through the nut but not much more as its just a waste of threads (a couple is fine, but it must thread all the way through the nut). So, per the pics, the studs into the towers need to be installed deeper using an Allen head wrench to turn them in, and the others need to come up so they are high enough to thread through as described above. Then, torque them in the proper sequence in three stages, first to say 35lbs, then 55lbs, then a final to 65lbs assuming you are using ARP lube (consult with others for proper torque with other lubes!).

I realize now that you are in Europe, so the references to "1/2 inch drive" and "65llbs" etc may need to be converted to metric? Regardless, same concept! I do believe the ARP studs are "1/2 inch" socket size and require a 12 point.

Re: Head question
Hi Greg,
Thanks for the advice.
I did as you said and everything went fine (I guess).
I torqued the studs with lube and followed your torque specs recommandations.
Will post some pictures off all the updates and little repairs I did when I'm done.
Thx for the help!

Re: Head question
Glad to hear Pierre! I'm sure everything is fine. You can recheck the torque after a few heat cycles of desired, but I'm not sure it's required for a stock gasket. Just set the wrench to 65lbs and torque each nut, no need to back them off first.
Look forward to hearing about any places you drive to in Europe and the reaction of those you meet to the car! Happy days!
