Kalifornia up to no good again.

CARB will make this happen, hell they tell the EPA what to do. Gray colored trivalent chrome in Kali's very near future. Decorative Hexavalent chrome shops (auto' type work) will be first to go.

Wondering if there are any TJ chrome shops with offices in San Diego where you can drop off pick up? No desire to cross the boarder if the need arrives.

These things are always such a quandary for me, and there's never a good answer that meets everyone's needs. The world is changing, and regardless of what you believe the era of the internal combustion engine in cars/transportation will come to an end, and sooner than we may think. I too want what I want (shiney chrome, powerful engines I can work on, 7 quarts of oil at a time, etc) but my view would likely change a lot if my child was born with a birth defect caused by a pollutant... the need for shiney chrome doesn't seem quite so important! Assuming I live into my 80s or so, I fully expect that I will be the last person to run and drive the Datsun very much. That's if I can find fuel at a price I can afford in the coming years. But change is inevitable. One of the reasons why I converted my engine to EFI is to try and make a non-emissions car cleaner after I've already done things to make it dirtier (mainly cam). It may be possible to put in a small catalytic converter now if I can control fuel better, but I haven't really researched this much to know if that will help or be viable. I watch these shows where they build super hot rods with blowers etc, and while they often use modern engines the fuel economy must still be terrible (can't make 600hp without burning some fuel!), and I don't think I could justify the long distance drives we take just to circumnavigate Mt Rainier in such a beast. Fortunately, the Roadster is fast enough while still economical for me!
Best to you all... get out and enjoy your rides while you can. The neat thing is that someday we probably won't be fueling up somewhere, but simply recharging our cells via solar while we drive... I'll add the engine sounds myself... boewup boewup!

Again, no perfect solutions... someone's gonna be upset, lose their livelihood, etc...

Not just shops in San Diego, but throughout the Southland have trucks doing just what you describe. (I would guess Arizona dn Texas too, but depends on their regulations)
I go to work at oh-dark-thirty in the morning, and there is a Bumper Boyz big rig headed south on the 405 every single day. (or at least was before March 2020!)
They don't have the best (nor worst) reputation, have been known to lose small things, as our parts don't resemble 60's Impala gear, so once separated they cannot recognize what it goes to.

I guess it's different if your close to one of the chrome shops.
We had a print shop in Raytown that made those sales mailers, the magazine paper style
An apartment complex next door , to this printing place bought 3 homes in a residential neighborhood and used them then rebuilt bigger
Tenants some older were getting cancers they complained of slight fumes from the business
I drove by it to and from lunch and smelled it
Then teens got sick@ the apartments...most moved away it was a big story here then

If the data presented in the article is accurate it sure sounds like the current regulations in place have done a remarkable job of cleaning up the industry. Chromium pollution is more prevalent in other industries that apparently CARB and EPA have no concerns about. Sometimes I worry that bureaucrats are looking for solutions to problems that no longer exist (or never did) And of course there are winners and losers when they get involved. It's good to be friends of said bureaucrats they tend to be the winners.

Are you aware of the water situation in and up from Miami ?
It is very unwise to drink that water , even to bathe in it , from the aquafer being contaminated in the 60s

I don't live in Florida, I do live in Kalifornia. So no I don't know of the Miami situation. There are plenty of legitimate environmental concerns, zero doubt.

Ya, nobody likes regulation, especially when it seems unfair or not a full reflection of reality. Unfortunately we are reaching the point where we can no longer accept crapping in our own bed while still sleeping in it, and there are simply more people in bed with us! As a kid I read about "Love Canal", a neighborhood built over/near a toxic waste dump that resulted in serious birth defects and other illnesses and it has always stuck with me.
My thing right now is f'n plastic! Since I've allowed myself to become more aware, I'm blown away by the amount of plastic in EVERYTHING. In reality it never goes away. Recycling? IT'S A JOKE for the most part despite great effort... it's just not economically viable in a capitalistic system, and there's very strong evidence that the plastics companies knew this would never work but supported it anyway to get the concern off the radar (worked on me!) Watch a few documentaries on it and you'll know... my "recycled" milk carton is more likely in a foreign country being picked over by some malnutritioned kid than holding new milk, and that's the EASIEST AND MOST ECONOMICAL plastic to recycle! Plastic truly TRANSFORMED our world and society, but what makes them great (strong, extremely moldable, cheap, etc) is now the problem. This is just how it is. Like Engineer Scott on Star Trek once said "Ya canna change the laws of physics"... we have to deal with this. And if you think companies will self regulate you're living on Fantasy Island and Tattoo is an NBA star (you can tell what TV I watched as a kid, eh?)
Sorry for the soap box. Again, there's no simple solutions for any of these things... and I'm still recycling my plastics as much as possible while still knowing it's not working. The very same engineers and engineering that created these things will be the ones who come up with the solutions, not me... God speed you math wiz gurus; I like milk!
