Transmission

Post by Newdatsun1600 »

I have a 1969 Datsun 1600 and the engine is in good shape but need a transmission. Are there any out there and where and if not are there any substitutes like maybe a Miata transmission?

As far as I know only a Datsun roadster 4 or 5 speed will bolt up to your 1600 engine. There are lots of 4 speeds out there, I think even a couple on ebay now. In fact I have two 4 speeds, one that needs a second gear synchro and the other I have no idea about. The 5 speed will be more difficult to find but they show up every once in a while and are way more costly.

These seem to be unloved, until you need one. My spare came from someone doing a motor/trans swap. I paid the asking price. My car is a 1970, 1600.

There are early and late variations. The shifter flops around, a known issue and the fix is a bandaid at best. If you work out getting the Miata box in the car, you will have customers! Sign me up.

I saw about a dozen 4 speed transmissions at Mike Young's shop a couple of days ago. His website is Datsunsports.com.

My original 4 speed is slowly disintegrating
I am in the process of fitting an R30 Skyline "stumpy" 5 speed to my '65 SP310.
Looks like it will be an easy fit
Nissanman, just trying to help.

Do a search for "5 spd transmission" you will find a few hits, like this one:

For the roadster 4 spd, I don't know of any alternatives, but, apparently 510 4 spd parts can be used in a rebuild....

Not sure if you are still looking, but I just saw this on Craigslist out this way. I'm sure someone out this way could get it for you. I'm about 40 miles from there but I could probably pick it up if need be. Then its a matter of getting it to you.
