Hard Top Rear Clips

Post by Gornal »

Hi,

I know there are several different types of Hard Tops but I have a 1966 Roadster (US - LHD) that came with a US made fibreglass hard top. It had front and side clips but has holes but no rear clips. I am unsure how the rear clips work or where they are meant to clip onto. Does anyone have any pics of their set-ups at the rear of their hard-tops they can share or know where to get the rear clips?

thank you

There are no rear clips for any of the hard tops I owned. Mine is a 68. I've had 2 hard tops in my life.

The back of the top should have some small "L" brackets, screwed into the top, with a hole in the portion that sticks out. This will be just behind the rear door posts. On the body, there are adjusters/tensioners for the soft top in the same position which should have a bolt that goes through the hole in the "L" bracket and is secured with a nut, or a wing nut. The adjuster can then alter the amount of tension on the back of the top and is used for both the soft top and the hard tops. I'll try to find the pictures I have posted in the past.

Post pictures of the rear holes that you suspect are for rear clips.

Right, and so a clever work-around was developed by Phil in San Diego.
When using the eyebolts with 2 nuts, you draw the top down hard onto the body, but then paint chafing happens pretty quick. (as both the top and the body are flexing / moving relative to one another)
So what Phil did was double nut the eyebolt, securing it to car, then nutting both sides of the L-bracket, so then that allowed you to "levitate" the top slightly upward, so that the top could be just barely touching a generously thick seal, (Home Depot Garage door seal?) which this set-up was less prone to paint chafe. Might require ny-locks to keep it from moving over time, as those eyebolts are always coarse thread.

A camper shell seal is a good option
