Correcting Pulled Stud in Valve Rocker Assy??

When recently adjusting the valves on an R16 I noticed there was quite a bit of resistance in turning one of the adjuster studs on #3 cylinder, more so than any of the other adjuster studs. While checking other fasteners in the assy I noticed that the stud that secures the Rocker shaft to the Head was spinning freely. I was able to pull it out by hand and saw it had pulled the cylinder head threads it bolted into. This was the 3rd stud, right beside #3 cylinder.

My question is can a heli-coil or time-sert be installed with the Head on the motor or do I have to pull it? Is the repair more appropriate for a machine shop or can it be a DYI fix? If latter what is proper choice - Heli-coil or Time-sent and advisable size from experience?

Is there a risk in running car until fix is done? I was able to adjust both valves for #3.

Post valve adjustment did present a thudding sound towards front portion of valve cover not present prior to adjustment.

Yes the repair can be done without removing the cylinder head, I have done this repair so this is first hand knowledge. You will need a kit and a few other things. Contact me if you need complete instructions. And for a skilled DIYer this is an easy repair.

A Heli-coil works great. I have done a number of them. Actually a fairly common failure.
