Just a quick oil change...
So as the title suggests I decided to do a quick oil change on the new roadster I purchased not knowing how long its been since its been serviced. Wow, that turned out to be an ordeal! First off the drain plug is stuck, no amount of wrenching made that thing budge. I did consider using my impact briefly but decided against it. I ended up using a manual transfer pump and pulled the oil out through the dipstick. Process worked but took forever (well it felt like forever). Next up was the oil filter that the Hulk himself must have installed in the late '80's. There's no battery in the car at the moment so that helped but I did end up removing the battery tray for a little extra room. A large wrench and some elbow grease later the filter finally budged.
I figure the next time I have access to a lift I'll give the drain plug another shot and see if I can get it to move. I'm not to concerned about it at this point though.
The adventures of an old car!

Re: Just a quick oil change...
So, tell us all, in what condition was the "oil".

Nissanman, just trying to help.

Re: Just a quick oil change...
1600 rope seal rear main ?
You should find out which oil they used
At times they leak like the filter wasn't tightened but it's the different oil going thru the rear main seal after a different oil

Re: Just a quick oil change...
I was told forty years ago not to use synthetics on a 'old engine', because seals would leak 'like a sieve.'
Blew that off, and have never had an issue with synthetics leaking in the Roadster engine, gearbox or differential.

It happened quite a bit at Datsun ,some old CJ jeeps tooC.Costine wrote: Thu Feb 25, 2021 4:53 pmI have never heard that before.redroadster wrote: Thu Feb 25, 2021 1:58 pm 1600 rope seal rear main ?

Might be the pennsylvania and paraphon based oils difference ...no more pennsylvania anymore
the rope seals were better in rural gravel roads , farmers preferred them, some neoprene seals have 2 outer seals to grab grit
I can tell you the 1st synthetic oil caused seapage , it got my newly put together SB in my 70 Chevelle

I second that, my experience with synthetics has been excellent.rwmann wrote: Thu Feb 25, 2021 5:05 pm I was told forty years ago not to use synthetics on a 'old engine', because seals would leak 'like a sieve.'

I drive my farm tractors, (see list below) on rural gravel roads and I sure don't like rope seals, LOL. Actually the grit from the roads is insignificant compared to in the fields.

Re: Just a quick oil change...
Well my experience was with my uncle's who had farms and feed trucks , I'm a city kid so ...I'm talking in 1960s
Rural here is Flint rock roads mostly , a bit worst than limestone very unhealthy to breath the sharp dust
Grit in the neopreme seal would wear down the crank journal were the 3/8 "rope wouldn't
