Knob repair questions

Post by mraitch »

I have a few knobs that are cracked/damaged around the screw holes.
Has anyone come up with a fix to repair??

Also, what is screw size/pitch?

I was checking out Datsunroadster.com (Rallye Roadster) a couple days ago and they have a huge selection of OEM knobs and retainer screws if you get into a replacement situation.

DAC21, have you actually checked w/Dann? I tried buying several things that were listed on his website & was told that they had been sold some time back. Prices were very out of date too.

Hopefully he has what is needed.

Peace,
Pat

Just for grins, would prefer to fix rather than replace.

More knowledge for people down the line!

I would go for a 2 part epoxy repair.
You could then re-drill an re-tap the screw hole to any thread you heart desires

No, I didn't inquire. Just saw that web page in passing. Not good if the site isn't being kept current, granted Dan has/had a ton of inventory keep track of.

Can’t say how accurate it is but the copyright on his page is 2018 & shows it was last updated in December 2018.

His pages make good reference but stock & prices need to be verified.

I fixed a few .
I ran them thru the wash cycle in the dishwasher. Sprayed a couple of the screws with silicone lube and threaded them into the clean screws. I have some por15 putty that sets rock hard so I mixed a little and molded it to the broken knob. Once cured, I unscrewed the screws and did a rough shape. I made a rod to fit the knob and reinstalled the set screw, fastening the knob to the rod. Chucked the knob rod in my drill press and finished sanding. A little paint and good as new.

+1 on Nissanmans suggestion, they make some great Epoxys, apply and create a new hole since the sw shaft has the threads to retain knobs.

Yes the knobs crack easily because they were made from Bakelite plastic. I remember my Throttle knob for my 67 1/2 slipping out of my hands and hitting the concrete and cracked. If you put a screw driver that is a bit to big in the hole when turning the screw in it will crack the knob as well....sometimes.
We created most of the knobs in modern injection plastic that look identical on the front and side and even have the knurled aluminum inserts in them. The back end, which you won't see, does have injection port nubs. Tooling was expensive, still paying it off, but you can throw our knobs across our parking lot, have done this in front of customers, and they don't break. Nice and hardy. Prices are current.
