New Repo Fuel Tank Poll

Post by DAC21 »

I traded email with Michael at Moparpro over the last couple days. I asked what tank would he be making, early or late? He wasn't aware of the differences. He believed he had a 1971 tank to use as a template. I mentioned that it may be from an 1970 for obvious reasons but that I knew of no differences from 1967.5 and later tanks. I explained the Fuel Return line addition and Fuel Sender mounting differences between the early and late tanks. I also mentioned that in my opinion it may be a hard sell short of a non repairable tank for someone to have to pay $500 for a new Repo tank and then an additional $225 or so for an OEM Fuel Sender.

Finally he asked my opinion on what tank to build. Now I know the final decision won't and should not be my based on my own biased opinion. I told him I would try to figure out how to put a poll together on 311s.org

If the poll is created, great ,if not please PM me. The choices:

1. 1965-1967 1600 Tank to spec. Will not work at all for late Car owners if they are using the return Fuel Line. Possible (not confirmed) different Tank Config. for late cars with Torsion Bar?

2. 1967.5-1970 Tank to spec. Will require early car owners to plug return line and buy $225 late Fuel Sender Unit,

3. Hybrid (if possible) 1967.5-1970 Tank to spec except with 5 hole Fuel Sender Mounting allowing late Car owners $25 VW Fuel Sending Unit swap or buy $225 1965-1967 OEM F.S.

As the Hybrid tank would be the most versatile it gets my vote.

My suggestion as I stated on Facebook is the late tank with the early 5 hole sender mounting recessed a little deeper to accommodate the 1500 sender. This would make it effectively a universal tank.

Is there a physical difference of the outside dimensions of the early and late tanks?

Will there be any issues with vented / non-vented fuel caps / filler necks, for any of the different fuel tank designs ?
I have an early, '67 tank, but I would support other peoples choices for the hybrid, if I can still use my locking gas cap. I thought the filler necks were different somehow...maybe I'm thinking of the later "return line thing"...please advise..

Gas tank has no bearing on what type gas cap is used

I asked Michael Young via Facebook that yesterday. There is no dimension difference.

Thanks. That's funny, I talked to him yesterday too and luckily he helped me out with my wiper assembly.

I am not in need of a tank, personally, but, I would vote for the hybrid.

If a slosh dish/resevoir were able to be incorporated for the EFI crowd, maybe everyone could be accommodated.... :D

I would not consider this unless it had provisions for an EFI pump.

Well I am getting ready to refurb a tank and if this goes forward I'd rather have new.
