Removing a steering wheel

I need to remove the steering wheel on my '68 Roadster so I can install the dash pad and do some restoration on the steering wheel. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Remove the horn button by pushing down then turning it counterclockwise - you might want to disconnect the battery first ;^)

Then you'll see a large nut holding the wheel in place. I've never needed a steering wheel puller, usually comes off with a slight tug.

I've removed the nut and even the lower push plate and I still can't get my '70 steering wheel to budge. I have pulled on it but don't want to break it. Any other suggstions? thanks

If the nut and washer are off, you should be able to wiggle it back and forth from side to side and it will pop off. They can be on there with some force though. If you are afraid of doing damage, you can get a steering wheel puller for cheap at Harbor Freight or one of the discount auto parts stores.

Thanks Sid, that was my next option but I thought there may be something I was missing. I have always just pulled on my early '67 and it came right off. Must be 'glued' on there from sitting outside for years.

Well now you have shed more light on the subject! It probably has a little rust on the splines. Spray the hub with some PB Blaster so that it can penetrate. Then get a rubber mallet and whack the hub (don't want to crack the wheel!) and it should decide to play nice...

Heres a tip for anyone reading this. Loosen the nut but leave it on untill you have got the wheel loose. If the wheel wont come off when you're pulling on it, when it does let go, it wont go anywhere. ie, you wont wack yourself in the face with it.
