Thanks. Those engine mounts took a while. Once I decided on which mount type, there was lots of templates, cutting, welding, grinding and they still aren't finished.
Hopefully the trans mount goes smoothly. Starting to focus on fuel delivery.
Surge tanks - increased plumbing and an extra fuel pump plus adding a return line to the tank. If modifying tank, could go with in tank lift pump. Or, in tank Civic pump with modifications. Aeromotive unit is great - built in regulator and sump tray. Clean install. But it is too tall. Need to think about this some more.

Rx-7 rear end in progress.
300ZX brakes to come.
I can't forget to check my heater core. I had steam on my inside windshield last time I drove it in the morning. Has anyone used the Vintage Air heater setup?
And then there is the radiator. I am having trouble finding one with both the inlet and outlet on the drivers side. I may just use the civic one and run the hose over to it.
Need to order rear shocks from JT to match the fronts I bought from him.

Not sure which ecu to run. I bought a complete RSX ecu and harness to be able to run Hondata, then some local guy (that is supposed to be very good) said he could do the whole thing including final wiring and dyno tune for less than the cost of the Hondata software. He seems to be a flake. Ghosting me for weeks. I spoke to other locals and they agreed that 1. He is a great tuner, and 2. He is a flake.

What are you guys (and gals) using on the frame? POR15?

I also need to start on my header once the motor is set in place.
Any recommendations on buying a flange and some bends, etc?

The motor is sitting on its mounts. Nothing bolted. Had to make some changes to the trans mount to the x member. I'll pick up some longer bolts and I should have that finished.

Next: The alternator will hit the steering shaft as it sits. I am going to raise the alternator up with that rolled piece of steel. I will need to machine some of that aluminum water pump housing away to get it to fit. I will put the intake on and take some measurements to see how small I need to go on the alternator.

I ordered an exhaust flange and some mandrel bends for header development. I am sure this will take a long time and waste a bunch of material. An alternate motor would be the K24-Z3 which has the single 3" pipe coming straight down along the side of the block. The Z3 would be super easy.

I am collecting brake parts. Need to find a 26mm 300ZX caliper for the drivers side (for less than $200 preferably). I found a right side caliper but need the left.

I got my 30mm calipers from O'Reilly's for less than that for the pair. Rockauto is cheap too.

26mm are more expensive apparently. I got one side from Rockauto. other side out of stock. I thought I checked O'Reillys. I'll look again.
Thanks

 Very cool. It's happening! As it sits in the picture what is ground clearance and hood clearance?
Is it even possible to relocate alt to passenger side?

This is always an option for more room too.

Yeah, I was trying not to move the steering, but I'll need to figure that out. The problem I am having with moving the steering is that the interference is up close to the steering box and there is less than 1/2 inch between the steering arm and frame already. Alvin's picture looks like they rotated the engine more than the standard amount. That may be a viable option because I can shim the drivers side motor mount and raise it up to get the same effect. I think I finished with the trans mount, just need to put the motor back in and confirm that I can bolt it down properly. It will probably need more adjustment. But while the motor is in, I can check the hood and ground clearance.

O'Reillys is out of stock on those calipers. I just ordered one from Summit last night. Won't be here for a month. Spriso is making more brake kits for the 26mm rotors anyway. I assume that the 26mm are more expensive because they only came on the 1990 300zx. (don't believe the "fitment guides" on ebay auctions) I selected the 26mm for any possible wheel clearance issues.

I am trying to drive it to Solvang. The brakes may need to wait due to time constraints. I am wrestling with doing brake lines, but trying not to drift.

There is not much room on the passenger side. below the vtec actuator is the oil filter. I will be moving the oil filter as it hits the frame. I believe I can machine the water pump housing down and get an alternator to fit if the solutions above don't work. There are a lot of bosses and moulded areas for equipment that I won't be installing on that housing.
If my plan works, I won't need a separate idler for belt tension.

Engine back in, trans mount done.
Hood clearance is approx 1/2"
Ground clearance will probably end up at 5". It is about 5 1/2 but still need to add radiator, exhaust, fluids, intake, etc. Ground clearance measurements aren't exact. The car is sitting on race ramps. Should be close though.

Next: heater, fuel system, and of course the header problem. Brakes will be last.

Have you finalized the steering yet? Curious how you resolved the clearance issueDans

Small battery options

Post by Slackline »

Steering is not finalized. I am going to try and machine off some of the metal on the water pump housing to raise the alternator higher with modified bracketry. I still need it to clear under the intake so I can't go too high. I have a "mini alternator" on its way...

Is anyone using the Odyssey PC680 battery with success? Looking for something small for the trunk.
