Oil Filter

Post by dads311 »

Quick question... I have my engine and trans out doing the 5 speed swap. I decided to change the oil on the engine while it is on the hoist. When I pulled the oil filter no oil drained out. The filter was definitely heavier than the new one and now after sitting for a few days there is some oil visible in the bottom. I do have the anti drain back tube installed in the filter housing and using WIIX 51512 filter. When I start it up cold it runs about 60psi on a mechanical gauge and about 30 psi at idle when warm... So is possible that when pulling the engine at the very steep angles required to get it out it drained the oil that should stay in the filter back out of the filter or do I have an issue I need to address?

My experience is that the longer the time between engine running and oil change the less oil in the filter (with anti-drain tube installed). I have seen tubes with different lengths - some with a bologna cut at the top and some with a straight cut - each of which may produce a different amount of residual oil.

Assuming you hadn't run the engine for a while before oil change, I don't think you have a problem. My opinion based on my observations. Others may know more.

Thanks Joe, that is what I was thinking and it had been several weeks since I last started the car. I was just surprised there was no oil that came out. I'm going to install the engine and trans back in the car today.
