Air scoop mounting bolts, Philips Head! Arggh!
OK, I must come clean, 21 year owner and this is first time pulling the engine! (for clutch issues, something broke in there)
Went thru the checklist on the Tech Wiki (very helpful) and will have a few updates for Steve on very minor things I noticed.
But here is one detail.
The air scoop is up front, so on my car that means "out of the oil drip spray zone".
So nice and dry, but that also means corroded.
And Philips head, with very limited torque access. And captive nuts are inside the boxed frame area.
So my suggestion, if you are down doing something in that area, is pull out those Philips head and put a hex head or Cap screw head on there, because I spent 2-3 hours hand-drilling mine out, and now will end up re-tapping the drilled holes.
Bolt 10 in the figure below.

Yep, those are definitely a pain. I got mine out with some heat. Then I tapped the holes and used anti seize when putting the screws back in. Being near moisture, it seems they are susceptible to corrosion.

It is metric, but I’m very sure it supposed to be a Phillips panhead. I think it might be the only chassis point that is metric?

I think the ground Phillips panhead screw is also metric.

JIS - or Japanese Industry Standard - is a Pacific Rim standard used for "Philips" (cross) type screwdrivers. Most people, professional mechanics included, don't even know that such a thing exists. But every "Philips" screw on a Japanese vehicle is not a Philips screw at all, but a JIS screw.

Wow, thanks folks, a font of knowledge, I had no idea of the JIS screw standard. Todd's idea of some heat and impact would have been a good first choice for me.
I have drilled them out, and sticking with the design trend, will retap using fine threads as they stand up to vibrations better.
Will probably go with a lock washer and socket head cap screw. This is an area that no matter the head there is really no room for grabbing outside with a Vise Grips, as the bumper bracket boxes it out. (I forget what is on other side)

If you don't have a JIS screwdriver set, I HIGHLY recommend adding them to your tool collection-- no more rounded out "phillips" screws with the correct screwdrivers. Vessel makes beautiful screwdrivers that are well worth the money.

Hands down the Vessel Screw drivers are the best I have ever used and they work fine on US spec screws as well. I bought a set of the impact type and they are amazing!

Re: Air scoop mounting bolts, Philips Head! Arggh!
You learn something new everyday. Owning my roadster over fifty years, I was not aware of JIS screws. It doesn't suprise me, there is a lot that is just a little different about our cars. Have I needed a JIS screwdriver? Hard to say. I certainly have butchered a screw or two in my life but I can't say a different driver would have holped or hindered. I think we all know that some screw drivers and bits fit better than others.
I know have a knew field of knowledge to explore...bit types.
This article both clarified and confused. https://www.webbikeworld.com/hozan-jis- ... rs-review/

That is a very interesting article-- I know that I have rounded out several sets of frozen SU screws over the years, but with my Vessel screw drivers I have not had that issue any longer when working on roadsters. Regardless of what the above article says about JIS screwdrivers, I still highly recommend a set of Vessel screw drivers for any roadster owner...

Re: Air scoop mounting bolts, Philips Head! Arggh!
Why did the posi- drive bits go obsolete ? They were everything , you could place a racheting screwdriver in the screw horizontal and it would stay there with the posi- driver bits
I had an may still have a JIS screwdriver , the problem was ...say your under dash and can't see well the screw and used the JIS on a Phillips it tweaked it and was trash
The very shallow 4 point screws were JIS , Mostly used in electrical mountings
My Snap on impact driver set came with a JIS bit
It twisted the bit before / very easy turning the bolt

Michael what JIS size tips are most commonly used on Roadsters? If I had the budget to buy 2/3 screw drivers what would you recommend? I see individual Vessels selling on Amazon. That nearly $100 kit that is linked is a bit to much.spriso wrote: Wed Jan 06, 2021 12:09 pm That is a very interesting article-- I know that I have rounded out several sets of frozen SU screws over the years, but with my Vessel screw drivers I have not had that issue any longer when working on roadsters. If I was just buying a few JIS screw drivers, I would highly recommend this kit:

https://www.vesseltools.com/handtools/s ... 123-detail
The ball grips are a little unconventional, but after years of using them, I am a big fan for really stubborn, small screws, and for $31 for the set of three, this is an excellent buy.

I bought 2 sizes of these, you can't beat them for stubborn, stuck screws. https://www.vesseltools.com/handtools/s ... ies-detail
Work fine as a regular screwdriver and you can "beat" on them with confidence. I bought a few pair and the gentleman helping me gave me a deal on multiple purchases, I just had to ask.
