Key Stuck in the Ignition - 1970 1600

Post by datsun65 »

Working on a recent project, a 1970 1600. The key is stuck in the ignition cylinder and I can't get it removed. The key has been sitting in the ignition for a very long time. The key will turn to the run position within the cylinder and return back. I've lubricated and cleaned with PB Blaster.

Thinking that since the Steering column/steering wheel unit is not connected to the car, it is possibly a safety feature not allowing the key to be removed?

Possibly, as a next step I would drill out the remaining two "Security Screws"?

Any advice would be apprciated.

You can take a small chisel Quarter inch wide. And work the break off screws/ bolts back out ...usually
A good locksmith best to remove the key .
Use a impact driver on the Phillips bolts

I think that if you use a small allen wrench in the hole on the bottom, and turn the key, you can remove the lock barrel. For the security screws, cut a slot in the head with a Dremel or drill and use an easy out

You could take the whole thing to a good locksmith as is. Looks like it is out of the car already

Thanks all for the recommendations and suggestions.

Was able to remove the key. The key wasn't bound up within the lock, but rather the switch itself wasn't allowing full rotation to allow the lock to release.

Once the electrical switch was removed, the key easily came out of the lock.

Next Question: which ignition electrical switch can I use to replace the current faulty unit?
