New Turbo!

Post by Dave »

The old engine swap section has been a bit quite since Alvin left us. I figured I get things moving with a few pics of my new turbo! I abandoned the journal bearing hell that is the T25 and upgraded to a Garrett GT2560R. Full ball bearing goodness.

Here's a few pics:

Keep those pics and info coming as things progress.

I always like to see what the swappers are up to.
(Just in case I decide to take the plunge on a different roadster.)

Dave,

Let us know how the swaintech coating works out. I am interested to know how well it works on a car that is already sorted out.

Thanks -

Thomas

already sorted out
Well, um, yeah. That's debatable.

I'll definitely keep you guys posted. The turbo is mounted and plumbed. Exhaust side is connected. Intake side is giving me a little trouble. Mostly because the compressor housing is so much bigger. The compressor inlet went OK but the compressor outlet is really fighting me. I have to re-do a section of the hot pipe. Also had to (Warning - Stop reading here Sid, Mark, and Will. Resume reading at the next paragraph) trim out a section of the inner fender wall to clear the turbo outlet elbow.

I think I'm over the hump now and should have the work wrapped up in a few days. I'll post some more pics later today.

It fits! Finally wrestled that SOB in there. I've got a laundry list of things left to do before I can go for a drive. I'm hoping to use the long weekend and at least be able to get it started on Tuesday.

It runs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally got some time to wrap up all the loose ends and get the car back together yesterday. I cranked it over with the fuel pump unplugged, no spark plugs, and the oil supply to the turbo disconnected so that I could let the engine get used to spinning again and build a supply of oil to the turbo. Remember, the car has not run since September 05.

After about 20 seconds of cranking I finally got oil up to the turbo. Shut her down and went about putting in new plugs, fresh gas, etc. Got set, said a little prayer, and cranked it over. She fired right up like the last time she had run was yesterday!

I let the car idle in the driveway until it got up to temp while I checked for smoke, leaks, etc. All looked good so I zipped down the block and back. Only got up to 3 pounds of boost as I didn't want to press my luck just yet. Felt good and strong; sounded good too.

I did notice some stumbling when I come to a stop. It actually died once when coasting down to a stop. The blow off valve also sounds much louder than I remember. I need to go over the BOV settings and connections as I think I have a leak. That would explain both issues and it is something that I had to repeatedly take on and off during the turbo swap. Other than that, the car seems to be A-OK.

Now for the kicker....Today is a beautiful sunny day. I hopped out of bed early to go do some tinkering and take a nice drive. As my coffee was brewing I went to round up my garage keys. Now where did I leave them? Not on the hook, not in the basement workshop., not on my desk, not on the kitchen counter. I was running out of the "usual" spots and about to resort to the back up spots: Pants pockets, the dog's bed, behind the desk, etc. I tried the garage door, just in case I had left it open. Nope, locked up tight. I took the opportunity to peek in the window and my now running 311 and, you guessed it, sitting right on the tonneau cover, my garage keys. Locked safely in the garage. Doh!!! On a Sunday when off hours locksmith calls start in the $250 to $300 range. Double doh!

Looks like I get to find something else to do on this fine sunny day while I wait for Monday and more affordable locksmith rates.

Man, I hate to laugh at your misfortune, but that is funny! With that over, have you tried to break in? The credit card trick or maybe a window?

Laugh away, Sid! I think it's kinda funny too.

There's no breaking in without doing more damage than what it would cost to just have the locksmith come out and bust me in. The door is deadbolted so the credit card trick is out. I've got 3 brand new windows and breaking one of them is going to cost me more than the locksmith. I could cut a hole in the roof and drop in....Any way you slice it, I'm screwed. I'll have the locksmith come by tomorrow. If he can't get me in I'll pick the smallest of the three windows and smashy smashy!

Here is a thought. Are you a member of AAA? If so, they may be able to get the locksmith to get you in with no out of pocket. I have not been a member in a LONG time, so I could be out to lunch, but it is worth checking out...

I take that all the remotes for the garage overhead door are also in the garage and there is no security keypad on the outside.

If thats also the case............bummer.

Nope, no AAA.

The garage door opener is circa 1975. No remote, no keypad, no stupid electric eyes, no auto reverse on overload, no way to get in from the outside!

It's OK. I used the spare time to finish hanging gutters on the garage, fill the pick-up for a dump run, take the dog to the dog park, and BBQ a sweet batch of teriyaki chicken. A Sunday well spent!
