Blinker Won't Turn Off

Post by tknishi »

I'm working in on bringing my car back to life after 4 years of sitting. One of the issues I have is the blinker, only the left blinker works, but it also doesn't shut off. I had no issues with the blinkers when i parked the car 4 years ago. Any suggestions on how i should diagnose? All the other lights seem to be working, headlights and high beams work.

Are you saying that the blinker doesn't cancel when the steering wheel rotates?
Do you have a sports steering wheel or the OEM wheel?
Check the cancel pins are intact on the backside of the steering wheel hub.
The stock wheel has cast lugs on it to cancel the blinkers: -

Some after market wheels have a plastic sleeve over a small pin.
Over time the sleeve can crack and disintegrate causing cancelling issues.

The blinker just doesn't go off period, lol. Steering wheel or blinker lever. I have to pull the battery for it to stop.

Guessing that the switch contacts in the steering column are bent such that one way doesn't make and other doesn't make contact. Remove the plastic shroud and have a look. The contacts are long pieces of brass. They can be relatively easily reformed.

I'd also take a look at your relay flashers and make sure wiring is in good shape.

So you ever have those times when you work on things and you make it worse.....

So removed the steering wheel and inspected the blinker assembly. i removed the entire blinker column assembly and checked and cleaned the contacts with some contact cleaner. I removed the blinker assembly from the column and disassembled the blinker switch (well at least i think i t was, lol) at the top, and cleaned inside there. By the way, be careful if you ever open that switch, there is a small ball bearing inside that helps roll the switch (almost lost it). Reassembled and reconnected the battery, and the blinker was still flashing. So disconnected all the wires completely from that blinker assembly, and the blinker was still going. So at least i think i was able to figure out that its not the switch and possibly the relays??

BUT THEN.....I put everything back on the column, and reconnected the battery and then the horn went off!! So now i have a blinker and a horn that won't shut off! LOL. I wasn't even mad, i could only laugh. I just disconnected the horns and the battery, and went upstairs and had a beer instead.

Will somebody just tell me where the blinker fluid goes?!

I think you went upstairs and drank the blinker fluid. See if this helps.

Sounds like the horn got grounded incorrectly when re-installed and it is engaged to the metal. At least this happened to me when I restored my horn. Talk about an embarrassing moment when someone waved to me while driving and I gave the "honk" and smile back - and the horn would not stop! haha.. I had to pull over, remove battery, and reinstall the horn button in the parking lot - I can laugh at it now.

Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

If I honked at another woman I don't need to worry about the boyfriend.. I need to worry about my wife who would kill me! hahaha ( for the record I got an amazing wife who lets me keep the Datsun so no honking like that needed ;) )

blinker fluid? Is it somehow related to Lucas replacement smoke kit? http://www3.telus.net/bc_triumph_registry/smoke.htm
