Re: 1970 SPL resto finally started...
Great timing on that question, since I just cut and installed the rubber body/frame pads yesterday.
I used Xcel marine foam, a closed cell rubber roll that I ordered on Amazon. It has a strong adhesive on one side, and cuts easily. $35 for enough to do 2 cars. In fact, if anyone here needs to replace their pads, and can pick it up in the East SF Bay, you can have the other half of this roll for free. PM me if you want it.
Here is a link to the roll on Amazon:

I guess that looks okay... if you're into perfection and all that...
Incredible. Inspiring stuff. Great looking work as always.

Interesting material, I'm wondering for those dropping the gas tank for the first time if they can use that in place of the OEM "horse hair" like material to protect from strap rub on the tank? longevity might be an issue? It's a bit thick but should compress nicely.funkaholik wrote: ↑Tue Dec 08, 2020 2:22 pm Great timing on that question, since I just cut and installed the rubber body/frame pads yesterday.

I saw 1/16" and 1/8" on amazon as well. That could work for the gas tank.

What material was used between the frame and the floor pan? Some sort of woven patch of fabric the was 1 foot longs 5 in wide x3/8 thick! Was that originally fiber glass?
What about the patches place in between the rea leaf springs??
Ahoy info woul be greatly appreciated

It was originally horsehair, and it was on the frame in several places. It had the bonus feature of holding moisture against the top of the framerails, accelerating rust. That is what I replaced with Xcel marine foam.
Here is a drawing with dimensions from elsewhere on this site. Hope this helps. Thank you to whoever created this image.

I feel like the original engineers missed an opportunity here.funkaholik wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 1:50 am It was originally horsehair, and it was on the frame in several places. It had the bonus feature of holding moisture against the top of the framerails, accelerating rust...
They really should have used Sea Lion Hair... that would have added salt as an additional corrosive agent, thereby compounding the rust problems...
If only they knew then what we know now.

Re: 1970 SPL resto finally started...
Havent posted any update in a while. I've been working on finishing up the rear differential assembly, but that's on hold until my zinc parts arrive back from the plater- who is apparently out on disability right now...
So, today I made some support bars so I can remove both doors while the body is off the frame. They are pretty simple, but they should do the trick.

Do you still have any of that material you used for the frame pads left over? I would like to get a small piece from you if you do so I can check it against some other material I have available.

Re: 1970 SPL resto finally started...
Finally made some more progress this weekend. Got my Zinc parts back from the platers, and was able to assemble the parking brake mechanism, and bolt the axle to the leafs, and the leafs and torque rod to the car. This means that the frame is sitting on all four wheels now. Major milestone!
Now, if I could just get my engine back from the shop...
Rear diff:
Full frame:
It appears that I failed to take a before photo of just how rusty and nasty the rear end and associated parts were, but trust me, it wasn't pretty.
