ignition coil bracket

Post by Linda »

Is there an ignition coil bracket that allows coil to mount vertically that people are using? I searched but did not see one except possibly from Summit:

I have not seen one in use. The bracket in the link from Summit would certainly work, but that thing is overkill! An adaptor plate would solve the problem.

get a piece of aluminum stock the length of the supporting bracket, drill 3 holes in it, countersink the center one, bolt bracket to one of the mounting holes, then bolt coil to stock.

It would have to be mounted lower, to account for the arc of the center coil wire. As I mentioned earlier, I have run an MSD Blaster 2 coil horizontally for almost a decade without any issues.

Guess I am not trusting the MSD coils as much as I used to. I had a red one, then the black epoxy filled MSD coil, now back to red since I wanted one with the correct specs on the box, which this one has. Anyway, I thought a correct mount would be helpful but there aren’t any easily available without a special order. So I will try that and see how it goes.
Thx

Linda, I cut a piece of plumbers tape and bolted to firewall then attached coil bracket to it.

Not sure what plumber’s tape is, that looks like a 1 “ wide piece of flat aluminum with 3 holes drilled in it. Then the bracket attaches to that. Yes, that is simple and effective, and should work just fine. :)
Thx, Tom!

I didn't get the memo, why are we rotating the coil 90 degrees?

Because the red MSD coil is supposed to be mounted vertical so that it cools correctly. The black epoxy filled mSD coil is hi vibration rated and can be on its side. I don’t know about Nissan coil mounting configurations. A few have mentioned that they have had no problem with the horizontal mounting, but I am just trying to optimize things..

Hmmm. Good to know.
I started with a MSD Blaster 2 red and eventually went to PerTronix 45011 Flame-Thrower II 45,000 Volt 0.6 ohm Coil, for the original look of black.
I have a feeling they are pretty much the same except for that high vibration one.

I forgot to check back in here with the fix after the suggestions made...😮

Seems to work fine but I will need a little longer coil wire now, but at least it is vertical.
