Question on ID plate

Post by jrgs3365 »

My car is registered as a’66 car but I noticed on the vehicle ID plate the second “6” is clearly different from the rest of the letter/numbers, and it appears there might be a “5” under the “6”. Is this typical? I know back in the day cars were identified by year sold and that did not always mesh with when it was built. But, should I be concerned?

Check to see if the frame number matches the tag number. More than likely the DMV will use the frame number since the tag is screwed on. If the numbers don't match you can always get another tag.

A higher resolution picture would help a bit. 1965 is pretty much a totally different car, so a 5 is pretty much ruled out.

Delete. Sorry I have a bad habit of fat fingering "quote" on my previous postings instead of hitting edit. Uhhh ok, ok. it's the Pinot Noir.

I was told that Nissan followed a fiscal calendar year starting in October. So, the car may have been a ‘66 model year built in late ‘65 and sold in ‘66. All numbers match up. Not a big deal but was just wondering if anyone else’s plate had a similar font change in their last digit of the model year.

In Canada, we had 1965 1600 and 1965 1500. in some cases, if the car did not sell right away, they change the year by restamping the ID tag. I have paperwork for a 66 SPL311-00032 (US car out of Oregon) and for a 65 SPL311-015XX (CDN car). I also have 1965 3 seaters SPl310-00026 and SPL310-00058, Although there are other low number 1500 that were only released in late 1964 and 1965. Both these early cars came with twin SU and not single SU like the very early 62-63 SPl310.
