'68 2000 Newb
Hi all. Jared Smith here from Buffalo, NY. First time caller, long time admirer. I recently acquired a '68 (titled '69) 2000 and I'm blown away! I've never owned a Datsun/Nissan or any classic car for that matter, so I guess that makes me a complete newb. I was originally looking for a general, classic roadster (MG, TR6, Fiat, etc) for a several months and thankfully stumbled across the Datsun. Didn't even know these beauty's existed! The search was on for the better part of a year but being on the East Coast proved to be a challenge. The moons finally aligned a few weeks ago and she's now in my garage. A little COVID pick-me-up purchase was needed! She's a single, family owned car with 30k original miles. Rebuilt motor, tranny and clutch in 2014. Daily driver condition, but hoping to make some upgrades over time. Not sure if this is the best place for questions, but had a few "newb" related topics for you veteran 311'ers. I can repost to another thread if appropriate.
- Just filled up with ethanol-free 90 the other day. Does the pump shut off automatically like new cars? I wasn't sure and stopped when I heard the "sloshing" getting louder.
- This might be a long shot, but anyone know of a knowledgeable Datsun repair shop in the Buffalo area? I came across Buffalo Datsun via FB, but the website is down and the street address is a neighborhood residence. Thoughts?
- Running an original points dizzy. Looks like there's several threads on electronic ignition, which I'll review more closely for pros/cons.
- Lastly, anyone have a used passenger tail light bezzle? The light is fine, but the metal ring is dented. Maybe it's all one piece?
That's all for now and look forward to getting to know everyone!

Re: '68 2000 Newb
Welcome! This is as good a place as any to start asking questions!
The gas pump shutting off is all in the gas nozzle, and not in the tank/or car, so it should work just fine. Still, I slow down the pump when nearing full so it doesn't splash back much. It only holds 10 gallons stone empty so beware!
I'm a little biased on the EI dizzie, but I do strongly recommend it.
Lastly the trim ring is replaceable and readily available.

Welcome Jared. Nice pick up. You will enjoy the car. There is another 2000 owner in the Buffalo area and he may chime in. There is also a group of us in New York that usually get together at Watkins Glen the second weekend of Sept. Would be happy to see you and the new ride if you can make it.
I will probably have the rear light part that you need. I will have to look through the stash and find one for you.

Welcome aboard Jared.
I actually used to live in Williamsville and my grandparenst used to live near Hertel Avenue.
The Tail light bezals are available. Check out Ebay or our Datsun Roadster Vendors (LIsted on 311s.org).
A well known Roadster Racer, Dick Tillinger used to be in Allegany.

Re: '68 2000 Newb
Thanks all for the friendly welcome and info. Not sure I can make the trip to Watkins this year, but hope to attend future gatherings. It'd be great to meet some fellow 311 locals soon. Maybe the other Buffalo owner can recommend a good Datsun mechanic? No issues at the moment, but like to a number at the ready when needed.
@Datsun65 always great to hear from people with Buffalo roots. If you're every back this way, please look me up.
@amazgjoe thanks for checking on the bezel. I'll email you separately with a pic (although you probably know what I'm looking for). I have a buddy that travels to Syracuse for work a few times a week and we might be able to coordinate through him. Stay tuned.
@notoptoy appreciate the insight and will be mindful of gasing up. E dizzy may be a 2021 purchase for piece of mind.

Hi Jared. Looks like a great find. Just be prepared for a lot of driving with a big smile on your face.
We're just across the river from you on the Canadian side and if the border ever re-opens we should get together for a bit of a fun-run.
I put the EI-Dizzy in from East Coast Roadster a few years ago & can recommend it.
Enjoy & make plans for Watkins Glen next year.

Hey Jared, got your pm and sent you some info. Great to have another one in the area. Now we can increase the Roadster attendance numbers at the local cruise nights by 100% (if we ever get to do that again)! Post some pics when you get a chance!

Hey Panda. Already started looking at the E Dizzy, but don't have time to tinker at the moment. It's definitely high on the priority list for next year.PandaBoy wrote: Fri Sep 04, 2020 8:56 am Hi Jared. Looks like a great find. Just be prepared for a lot of driving with a big smile on your face.

I'm totally down! Let's hope things get back to normal sooner than later. I'll throw some pics up later in the week.MattC wrote: Fri Sep 04, 2020 11:15 am Hey Jared, got your pm and sent you some info. Great to have another one in the area. I think I missed the pic in your first post before...looks awesome! I think my car was originally red also. Anyway, I put in an E Dizzy a few months ago. It's been great! I made a video of the process...

Hi Jared and Welcome! Sounds like you got a really nice car! You’ll love driving it! I am in Penn Yan, NY. I have a tail light bezel of amazingjoe doesn’t. Although the ones I have have some finish issues, not dented ..definitely not show quality. Yours for free. Join us some day for a finger lakes wine tour, you too Matt! The more cars on the run the more fun to participate. It’s really fun to run with other roadster and old Zs

We're heading to Chimney Bluffs in Sodus on Saturday for a day trip, along with my brother-in-law with his Alfa. Not sure what route we're taking yet. Keep me in the loop about any tours you make Joe!
