bizzarro wiring problem

I've been chasing this on my roadster for about a week now.

'67.5 1600

When it turn on the wipers - high or low - the turn signal indicators on the dash light up!

Indicators do not come on with the turn signals.

Wiring was removed from the engine bay for painting, so there is a good chance a wire is wrong somewhere, but all of the wiring and connections I have checked so far are good and correct. Fuse box checked.

According to the diagram the indicators and the wiper motor share a common ground - wondering if that is a clue....

or maybe the wiper motor is shorted out....

any ideas welcome!

Is this the engine harness I made you? In the engine bay it's hard to hook up things wrong excerpt the two relays.

Yes the wiper motor and turn signals share the ground wire but other than that they are completely different circuits. Only thing that I can think of is when you plugged the engine harness back in the ground wire bullet connector got hooked up wrong.

Hi Curtis,

I'm looking at your 68-70 wiper diagram and tryin to wrap my head around it!

Here's what I think is happening:

wiper operation

off:

power comes from fuse box (BL/R) to motor

G/Y wire gets power from (BL/R) at motor

BL (low) wire gets power from G/Y through switch to "park" the motor - the motor has +12 going to both sides


Low:

power comes from fuse box (BL/R) to motor

G/Y wire gets ground through BK wire at motor (motor engages switch to keep power until raching the park position)

BL (low) from motor gets ground through switch


High:

power comes from fuse box (BL/R) to motor

G/Y wire gets ground through BK wire at motor (motor engages switch to keep power until raching the park position)

BL/W (high) from motor gets ground through switch

There's no green/yellow, blue yellow.

Leigh, one bit of information is missing. When you turn on the wipers, do they work?

No, they do not!

I think I have a ground missing or hooked up to power somewhere.....

I would look to see if the ground lug for the wiper motor & dash ground is clean & making good contact to the body. If you have a volt meter you can turn the wipers on & measure between the body/frame & the ground wire terminal(s). If there is voltage, that connection is bad. I don't recall if they use the wipers & lights use the same wire going to ground or each have their own lug. IF it is a ground problem I'd recommend installing an internal tooth lock washer between the lug & the body. (I also can't remember where that ground is but I suspect it is on the dash). I'd look at mine but it's 1200 miles away so I can;t see it well from here.

And the winning answer is BAD GROUND!

One of the two wires that ground to the chassis underneath the windshield washer bag was not making good contact. It happened to be the ground for the wiper switch. I finally discovered that the black wire in the harness at the switch connection was not getting ground.

I had used a chassis paint on the frame and it effectively blocked the ground. I ran a tap through the captive nut in the frame and ran a jumper to the starter ground, just to be sure.

Works fine now!

Yup, that ground is for everything in the dash.
