Maybe if you put a slit in the cap where it enters the housing it would fit? OP said it was not tapered so it was tight.

No, the OP was talking about the Avonride ones, which are on Amazon now for about $38 for 4 of them. I might go that route if I can't fix the original one. The NAPA ones hit solidly on the outer edge of the hub and I feel like you'd probably destroy them (or the hub) trying to get them in.

So I lost a dust cap recently. Wanted something quick so got an Autozone dust cap, Dorman 13996, with a 1.81 OD diameter to fit in to my measured 1.85 hub. The cap slid in like I thought so I bent out the lip of the cap at 4 points around the edge so that it would tap in. Plan to use a tiny bit of blue Loctite and then see how it all works.
Not as nice as stock but OK. Doing the other side as well.
