Rod Bearing appearance

Post by roadsterdude1600 »

Just a quick question before I proceed further with my rebuild and have to backtrack. I have installed 3 of my four pistons but have a nagging question about my rod bearings. They are kind of dull and mottled. Smooth, but not shiny like my main bearings and cam bearings. Should they too be shiny and gleaming, or is the dull mottled, but smooth appearance OK (I am told by my machinist that is not a problem). My first rebuild and I want to do this once. Maybe a little anal about what I am doing, but do not want to go further before I am confident. Would post a picture, but I am having trouble getting a picture to post. Opinions? (R-16)

Shiny is not necessary. They should be fine. If you want to shine them rub with plain paper towel. You are not removing material just burnishing them.

Since the other bearings are shiny, I assumed rod bearings should also have a mirror-like finish. Like I said this is my first build, and I am just asking. Thanks for the input, I feel more confident now.

They should look just like they do new
The slightly dull lead helps it retain a film of oil more than a shiny smooth worn condition
Ive taken apart many engines at 10 -25 k and the bearings are almost just like new ....the crank never touches the bearings with 7-10 psi pressure

Good to know. I checked the clearance with plastiguage and it was .001 - .0015 on each bearing. Thought that was promising. Thanks for the help.
