New '67 1600 owner from Virginia

Hello everyone!

My 67 1600 (#04749) just arrived today from Oregon. I'm excited to start this project. She feels like she has a solid foundation under those patches of surface rust, but I guess I truly won't know that until parts start coming off. Starting to learn her history, and trying to identify the original color (looks like she got a silver tone added to the top). I did not know how small they were on the inside until I tried to get behind the wheel, and I'm only 5'10". Just waiting for the battery to charge so I can pull her into the garage.

Look forward to learning all you guys have to share.

Welcome, great start! Post some pictures after your first clean up, I'll bet you'll be impressed with a good cleaning.

Thanks! I could try, but I doubt the paint is going to come back any more than it already is. Its all going to have to come off in the future later anyways, so I'm not worried.

Well I highly recommend driving it and bonding with it before you start into any major renovation project. Bond with it a little first - get it driving and stopping and make decisions from there! I always like to clean up a new to me car - just for the things you learn and discover - sometimes there are little "Easter eggs" left behind by Previous owners. Again, welcome - you have joined a great resource!

Oh, there will be some bonding time first. With the heat today, nearly welded myself to the car working on the car outside trying to get it started. lol

Discovered the front lights are dead (no worries), has no seat belts, and not sure if the tails even work. That will limit my driving exposure.

Yes, without a doubt these are small cars. You may be able to gain some leg room by redrilling the seat holes a bit further back (make your new holes carefully so they align) and replacing the steering wheel with something of smaller diameter. Welcome to the family, all questions answered here without BS!

While the paint is far gone and ugly, she has some good bones to work with, so I'm excited to see what she turns into when done. Most of the chrome is in good shape, and feels like the rust is really manageable.

I was look at the seat mounting, and there is about 2 inches left to go back. May have to go smaller wheel and work on my arm muscles too. Could be those seats (which I have no clue what they are out of) are also pushing me closer to the wheel.

Right now, the things I'm researching before tear down:
  • Trying to find the VIN on the frame. I was hoping it was visible from the engine bay, but I might have to get under?
  • I'm going to have to get inside the transmission as 2nd gear syncro is going. I'm open to a 5-speed swap, but that might be cost restrictive if I can even find one
  • Its leaking at the thermostat housing, but looking for parts, there was something about 3-hole vs 2-hole head, so I'm trying to learn what that difference is
  • I would like to rebuild the radio, but I cannot seem to find where I can buy Aurora Designs components; seems like its dealer only and I have to pay them to convert (yuck)
But hey, I fixed the headlights! Apparently there is a 3rd position on the headlight switch, and when the parking lights didn't turn on, I figured that's the only on position. lol

I have some original seats for your car. I would suggest recovering. Your engine uses the 2 bolt tower.
