Felt Headliner for Hardtop

Post by Bigtaku »

Hello group, I am waiting for my felt hardtop headliner to arrive from Amazon in a few days. I know most of you don't even like hardtops but if your going to have one it should be fantastic! I have a few options but wonder what others have done to make it look clean because without a headliner backboard this is going to be tricky. The felt has a backing and also has adhesive already part of the package. I will most likely glue the felt and cut off the backing near the weatherstripping so the felt can be tucked under some of the weatherstrip. This will be harder on the front of the hardtop with the latches. I also have plenty of soundproofing material left over that could be used. Photos and advice would be wonderful.
Thanks in advance

You didn't want to use conventional headliner material?

I have a "soft" headliner, not sure if it's felt.

I have a low-windshield, so my latches are different:

It is conventional material, it just looks like felt to me.

Trunk mat, which is often used on custom speaker enclosures, might make a good choice. It accepts adhesive well and conforms to compound curves easily. Being a little thicker than fabric it might offer better insulation and noise suppression. Color choices are limited however.

Thank you Alvin, the factory hardtops were a better design hands down. Weatherstrip on mine must have been an afterthought for them. My hardtop does not have the edges around the windows like yours (mater of fact, I have no edge, just rounded off then it goes flat).

I have the custom hardtop brand. Plus mine has been modified but I don't think it would have affected the weatherstrip. The weatherstrip for the door windows I have a glue on piece that the headliner will be placed very close to or slightly under. I have the porthole windows on the sides that I will be able to cover the headliner with but this is a metal ring not weatherstrip. The lower section that will be on the body behind and beside the seats have two different angles from the sides and back (the sides are vertical and the back is angled out toward the trunk about 45 degrees) so I can't use the push on weatherstrip like you have.

I bought a 1"x 5/8" solid foam weatherstrip for this section. The problem is the sides need 6/8" to an 1" of foam and the rear part only needs 5/8". I could not find a 1"x 1" solid foam weatherstrip, I think that would work but no luck finding one.

I am thinking I will carefully cut some weatherstrip and glue it to the side portions to get the correct protection height for my paint. The front I have the Datsunparts.com strip that the headliner will be placed very close to. The rear window should also be easy to hide the headliner edge. Anyone else with a Custom Hardtop with headliner?

I had ordered this weatherstrip but didn't think it would work. It's not perfect but not bad at all! Thank you to my wife for getting me out of my own way. Now back to the subject at hand, the headliner.
