SR or KA valve cover that says Datsun?

Post by tig »

I'm learning about these motors. I have yet to see one with DATSUN on it. I don't like the idea of my valve cover saying NISSAN.

Or, put another way, it would be a nice touch for a swap like this to have it say DATSUN and not NISSAN.

I'm thinking about taking the Datsun center out of an old valve cover and tig welding it to the intake on my build. I've cut it out and spent much of the weekend repeatedly cleaning it and baking it in the toaster oven to try to get the oil that's penetrated the aluminum over time out so I can weld it. I need to build up an area that had been previously welded (bottom left corner) and then sand the ribs smooth off the back. I'll powdercoat the recessed part and then sand off the letters so the DATSUN should shine brightly. At least this is my current plan.

Strange. First time I've ever heard anyone says this. You know that the original engine (U20) valve cover says "Nissan" on it?

Depending on what model SR20, they do not have "Nissan" lettering cast into the valve cover, and you can choose whatever coil-pack cover you like:

There are lots of "Datsun" coil pack covers on Ebay. Also, a few people have shaved off the "Nissan" lettering and welded in the "Datsun" lettering, even on the non-Nissan motors (like the Miata BP). Here is a KA24 cover:

To be totally honest...it is cheesy. The "datsun" coil-pack covers as well. my 2 cents!

Have you tried spray can brake cleaner the to remove excess oils for welding. Works good for prepping steel so I can’t see why it won’t work for aluminum.
Thats not a R16 death rattle....its a dried leaf hitting my heater blower fan.

Please be careful of welding after using brake clean on parts you plan to weld. There are multiple articles but this guys experience is for real.

:-)
I bought this one on FB marketplace for $10. My wife asked why I didn't just use the one in the basement, I smiled and asked if she would ever use it again after I use it for this (and small powdercoating jobs). Then she was glad with my $10 purchase.

I always thought it made sense for it to say Nissan since that was what the original 2 liter valve cover said...
