Newb intro
Heyo,
I'm a new roadster owner. Happened across a late '69 1600, looked like a good candidate for a project to work with my kids. I have fond memories of working with my dad when I was their age, and I hope I can put those memories into them as well.
I'm not new to working on cars, but I think this project probably has the smallest parts support.
There's a long way to go, but it's a marathon, not a sprint. My oldest has 3 years until he's old enough to drive legally.

“Project to work with my kids“...hmm, isn’t that just code for slave labor
Anything to get the kids off the couch, and learning skills that will save them money and time throughout their lives is a worthy endeavor.
Give them the easy fun stuff first, then start slipping in the grunt work
PS. I think you’ll find that there is much more parts support then you think. Hit the quick links bar at the top left of the page and check out the vendors.

Well, unless the seats out of my 240Z really change things, I won't ever be in a position to drive this car.theunz wrote: Wed Jun 17, 2020 8:02 am “Project to work with my kids“...hmm, isn’t that just code for slave labor

It's theirs, so if they're working, it's toward the goal of them getting to drive it.

I think that's a great idea to work on this project with your kids! You will have plenty of support on this site too. You will come across obstacles along the way but don't be afraid to ask
. Also be sure to take lots of pictures if/when you can and create a "member's garage" post so we can follow your journey. Excited to see the build!

Re: Newb intro
After doing some questionable wiring, talking the kids through how to replace all the consumables on a distributor, and letting some MMO soak for a week, they got it started.
I've got a parts car coming by tomorrow to go through with another roadster local, then I'm having them start the body work.

Re: Newb intro
They've multiplied.
We're breaking the red one for its frame and the fenderwell/body front. The rest of the body is far, far gone.
The kids have taken it down to this:
We're going to take it into the back yard tonight, and they'll start cleaning it up.

Wow, that was fast, 10 days since you announced the parts car. Kids not in school...oh wait, this IS school
They have it torn down nicely.
Be careful with the power tools.

They're very careful and deliberate. In fact, the only one with an injury so far is me. I dropped the frame on my foot while moving it to the back yard.Linda wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 9:01 pm Wow, that was fast, 10 days since you announced the parts car. I think the plan that's going to work is for them to clean up the frame, make new body mounts, then move it into the garage and build up the suspension.
Whether we do a full-on blast and powdercoat with the frame depends on what they discover as they clean it up with wire brushes. We've already got the supplies to blast and powdercoat the suspension bits in the garage, so that's pretty much a given. Fortunately, the only real suspension on the car is the front, so while centerlinks, tie rods, and control arm bushing sets are expensive, at least I'm only buying that stuff for one end.

I have new hardware and parts listed on EBAY. Hardware kits for the interior, engine bay, trunk and bumpers, along with numerous restored parts.

Re: Newb intro
Be sure and check numbers on your titles, if you have them, just to be sure you don't try to register something with the wrong number. When I re-framed my car I had cut the number off the old frame with photo evidence where i took it out. Mine is a 67½ and I needed to keep the numbers right. So mine actually has two numbers on the title.
Great project for you and the kids.
