Radiater Overflow

Post by Rob Roadster »

Hi All

Congrats on a fab forum, I have spent many long hours trolling these forums and trying to absorb all the info :-)

I have a 65 1500 in reasnable runnning condition but as it is winter here in Australia I thought it was time to get stuck in and do a few things that I have been putting off.

My question is - At the moment I have no radiator overflow tank, did all roadsters come with them ? The overflow from my radiator comes from the filler neck, (above where the cap lifts) and just flows to the ground - every time I run the car I have to refill the radiator. The cap is new (bought from a Nissan dealership) and from memory is rated at around 10psi. I cannot see anywhere on the radiator that an overflow whould have been fitted (no holes filled with bolts ect).

Is there anyway to fit an overflow tank to this radiator without drilling holes on it ?

Thanks in advance

Overflow Tank

Post by Linusrp »

Rob,

Facing forward, the overflow tank sits directly to the left of the radiator, in front of the washer fluid bottle. The tubing off the radiator cap housing attaches to the overflow tank via a 'U-shaped' tube on the lower side of the overflow tank. Although I don't have an extra tank for you myself someone else on the list may, or they show up on ebay now and then fairly cheap. Hope that helps.

Rob,

The "overflow tank" on the 1600s and 2000s is really more of a surge tank. It is pressurized - unlike most other overflow tanks. To mount an overflow tank is pretty easy. JC Whitney and others used to sell them, but they are getting scarce. An option would be to get the JC Whitney washer assembly and use the tank as an overflow tank. Just run the line that you already have over to the tank. It will then catch the overflow.

Rob, I noticed that you don't have a fan shroud installed... is the engine temperature normal even without it? I've read that it's better to have it on to improve the airflow through the radiator... you might want to consider installing one. :D just my two pesos worth

tank, and shroud

Post by FergO2k »

Yep, Steven is right, a shroud would be a good idea. It helps the flow of air be more "thru" and less "radial spray". Both radiator and tank are pressurized, original was 7psi but 10 should be okay, the only pressure worry in the line is the heater core, and the difference between 7 and 10 ain't much.

I don't recall having an overflow tank on my '64 1500. Did the '65s have them?

I've seen the old hot rodder trick of using a beer can as an overflow catch tank. Maybe a large Asahi or Sapporo container?

Thanks all for the quick response - I have got an overflow bottle from the local wreckers and will fit that, should do the trick.

As project_timemachine noticed I don't have a shroud on the car, it had dissapeared by the time I bought the car. She runs a bit on the warm side but not alarmling so (It doesn't get super warm down here near Antartica  ) - anyone in Australia willing to part with a shroud ?

Rob,

So that you know, the 1965 1500 has a unique shroud. The radiator is also unique to that car - it is a short height wide radiator while the other roadster radiators were taller. It will be pretty tough to find that exact shroud for your car, and I doubt that other shrouds will work as well. You could probably fab one though as they are not that unusual in shape. Best of luck!
