Turbocharged U20 Roadster

Post by Alvin »

I had only seen one turbocharged U20 in person (Mark's) but this one is new to me. Check out the draw-through SU setup!

Whoa. Interesting that 1 SU can provide enough air and fuel to power a turbo 2 litre.

Mike Kerr, how that a name from the past. Mike was a vendor in the 90s, a contemporary with Mike Young.

I just visited the web site, now run by his son.

I had seen that car back 2001 in Mike’s shop. It was an interesting build.

I'd be a bit concerned about the exhaust baking the brake lines. Some shielding in there would be a very good idea. The heat shield product I used on my header is amazing...

Also did anyone notice the custom made intake manifold, hydraulic fan clutch and the use of 2 radiator expansion tanks? There are a lot of other interesting mods in this build.

Water injection? Considering there's no intercooler, limited tuning ability with an SU vs a Mikuni type carb (for fuel enrichment on boost), unknown boost pressure and compression, I would think a water/methanol injection might be a good idea. But really, I KNOW nothing... :D

Yeah, 1980's turbo tech, SU, no intercooler, no EFi fuel/timing map, no boost timing retard? pretty brave.

I believe it was Mike Kerr that I bought my first Roadster from, way back in 1983 when he was operating out of Fremont, Ca
