Fastener listing by size/type

Post by Jimmers74 »

On my 69 SPL311, I'm finding incorrect use of SAE/Metric fasteners, that is SAE where metric should be and I'm sure it is vice versa. I've looked through the site for a listing of fasteners by location, size/type, but have not found same. If it's on here, or I can be directed to a source, it would be much appreciated. Thx and stay well.

If you have the factory Service Manual for the SP(L)311 (Publication Number: 11230160), it lists on page 9 the original SAE fasteners with their equivalent Metric size as used from Engine No. R-40001.
There are some exceptions, not all fasteners were converted [mainly some engine bolts and small screws].
If you don't have that Manual let me know and I'll scan it for you :smt023

I have a couple of service manuals, but not factory published. If you would send that, I would appreciate it very much.

Well done Linda!
Jimmers74 you can download page 9 from "SP(L) 311 Service Manual [(16 MB) Screen Quality] - Pub. No. 48121(30430030) " located in the Manuals tab of the Tech Wiki section.

Beware of thinking a metric car is all metric, they are not. On my 66 and 67 cars which are considered SAE there is SAE, British pipe thread, an occasional metric, and SAE with a metric head.

And then on the SU carb screws there is the as I understand it a french standard weird metric screw. Fortunately they have now been reproduced in stainless.

I'm currently making a spreadsheet of every factory part number of every bolt and screw in the body, frame and suspension. This way I can find where duplicate bolts and screws have been used. Not done but my first sorts by part number have found incorrect stuff on my car.
66 stroker, almost done.

Curtis, Years ago, I had 67.5 SPL311, and there was a mixture of SAE and metic fasterners from the factory. I learned the hard way when I replaced the engine, and was within 5 lbs of the torque on the flywheel, when the threads let go. Turns out, the crank was threaded SAE and I was putting in metric bolts from my old one. Had to drill out, retap and rethread. Some owners will force SAE bolts, I suppose since they are easier to find, into metric threads. Close, but no cigar. Just discovered this was done on the shaft of the water pump. PO or whomever, did my present car a great disservice.

For future considerations, this might be a source for obscure Metric / SAE fasteners.

The bolt list is close but not quite correct. Most of the acrews and bolts listed as 3/4" long are in fact 5/8".

Most of the time it doesn't matter but in a couple places it makes them a touch long. Same with some of the other stuff.

For the one car I had a lot of stuff replated. For the other one I'm using stainless from bolt depot and AN bolts that are cadmium plated from Spruce Aircraft. Cheaper than replate and I can get the in between sizes.

With AN bolts you have to make sure there is enough thread.
